  1. THE CREATION STORY

  2. The Creation Story • In the beginning there was Chaos • Out of the void appeared Erebus and Night. • Love was born, bringing the start of order • From Love came Light and Day • Once there was Light and Day, Gaea, mother earth, appeared.

  3. Gaea alone gave birth to Uranus, father heaven • Together Gaea and Uranus produced the three Cyclopes, the three Hecatoncheires, and the twelve Titans.

  4. Uranus hated the Hecatoncheires, and imprisoned them by pushing them into Tartarus, the underworld. • Gaea was angered by the imprisonment, so she asked the Titans to plot against Uranus. All were too afraid but Cronus.

  5. Cronus beat Uranus, but he did not release the Cyclopes and the Hecatoncheires. • Cronus married Rhea, his sister. • The Titans ruled for many ages and had many offspring.

  6. Gaea and Uranus both prophesized that Cronus would be overthrown by a son • Cronus swallowed all of his babies upon birth, except his sixth child, Zeus, because Rhea gave him a stone to swallow instead. • Zeus ended up being Cronus’s cupbearer, and slipped him an elixir to vomit all his children up, which he did.

  7. Zeus’s brothers and sisters banded together, (and the Cylopes and Hecatoncheires they let go) to overthrow Cronus, Atlas, and the other Titans. • Cronus and the other Titans were banished to Tartarus, but Atlas was punished with holding up the world for the rest of his life.
