  4. The Placement Handbook Covers the Foundation Degree (FdA) & BA (Hons) in Youth and Community Work and the Graduate Diploma (Grad Dip) in Youth Work

  5. 360 hours substantive WBL at level 4 – flexible to meet the needs of the student / organisation Uses their own employment / volunteering as WBL Submits Level 4 portfolio in November the following year 180 hours alternative placement at Level 5 FdA Placements – Part Time

  6. FdA - Full Time route • 270 hours on WBL at Level 4 and 5 (years 1 and 2) • Year 1 Start – January • Year 2 Start - October • Hand in joint WBL / PPD portfolio mid June (Year 1) and March (Year 2)

  7. BA (Hons) Full time route • Total for 3 years: 888 hours • Year 1: 335 hours from end of January - end of May • Year 2: 335 hours from October until Jan / Feb • Year 3: 228 hours from Nov - April • Students need to complete placements in 2 separate locations, thus placement 3 can take place in the same location as 1 or 2

  8. BA (Hons) part time route • Total hours: 888 over 5 years • Employment based, however, the student must complete an alternative placement in a different setting for at least 222 hours • We anticipate that students may change employers during the 5 year period which would enable them to complete the alternative placement

  9. Grad Dip – Part Time Route Placement 1 (Professional Practice 1 – year one) 240 hours – current post? September to May Placement 2 (Professional Practice 2 – year two) 120 hours - September to May

  10. First placement (PP1) Starts Oct Minimum 240 hours Placement lasts until May Second Placement (PP2) In a different setting Starts June - August Minimum of 4 weeks 120 hours in total Grad Dip Placements – Full time route

  11. All placements • At least 50% of time engaged in face to face practice with 13 – 19 years • Second placement needs to be different from first, preferably different organisation • Focus on Occupational standards...

  12. NOS Standards – Placement 1 • A1Establish relationships and maintain dialogue with young people • D1 Work as an effective and reflective practitioner • D2 Work in ways which promote equality of opportunity, participation & responsibility • D4 Work with young people to safeguard their welfare

  13. NOS Standards – Placement 2 • D3 Manage your work and create effective work relationships • B3 Enable young people to work effectively in groups • F2 Develop teams and individuals to enhance the quality of Youth Work • F3 Promote a culture of health and safety

Fieldwork Supervisor • Agree Learning Agreement/Contract • Student induction • Support student x 1 hour weekly supervision (using recordings as a focus, keep records) • Work alongside the student / model good practice • Observe student practice (min. 2) • Sign timesheets • 3 way meetings (usually 3) • Fill out placement report • Liaise with the Fieldwork/Module Tutors • Fill out Cause for Concern form if necessary

  15. 3 Way meetings • 1st meeting - Formative • Learning Agreement discussed (learning needs and opportunities agreed), induction, module outcomes, clarifying roles and responsibilities • Reflective Recordings – progress so far • 2nd meeting – Mid Way Review - Formative (full-time students only) • Student’s Progress • Are learning needs being addressed? • Discussion based on reflective recordings – ‘critical incidents’ • Final meeting - Summative • Have learning needs/module outcomes been met? • Focus on the student and the Fieldwork Report • Use of reflective recordings

BA / FdA portfolio/ assessment • Section 1: Personal and professional development (PPD) • Section 2: Work Based Learning (WBL) • 12 reflective recordings: inc. 1 x org. policy 1 x AOP • 10 completed units • Evidence of the 3-way meetings • Weekly time log sheet • 2 x observations visits sheets • Supervisor's report • Evidence of interventions / curriculum planning There is a "How to write your portfolio guide"!

Grad Dip portfolio/ assessment • Placement Learning Agreement • Placement Mid way review • Summative Report • Confirmation of minimum hours in practice • 2 x Supervisor's Observation Forms • 12 or more reflective recordings • Evidence of Supervision • Examples of interventions linked to national outcomes • Examples of organisational policy documents and analysis • PPD portfolio - including distance travelled
