Oklahoma Parents Center About us… The (OPC) is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit agency that operates the statewide federally funded Parent Training and Information Center (PTI) in Oklahoma.  We are funded in part under the Parent Training and Information Centers Grant Competition. (CFDA 64.3) and the Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE). The current project began October 1, 2010. Mission Statement… Oklahoma Parents Center is dedicated to the inclusion and equality of children and adults with disabilities. Our mission is to train, inform, educate, and support parents, families, professionals and consumers in building partnerships that meet the needs of children and youth with the full range of disabilities ages birth through twenty-six.

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act – IDEA 2004 • The law tells us that parents are expected to be equal partners in planning and implementing their child’s educational program. • No Child Left Behind – Parent involvement and choice is expected. • IDEA – Required parent participation since 1975 and funds the Parent Training and Information Centers (PTIs).

  9. Six Principles of IDEA • A Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) • Appropriate Evaluation • An Individualized Education Program (IEP) • Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) • Parent and Student Participation in Decision Making • Procedural Safeguards

  10. 504 No otherwise qualified individual with a disability…shall, solely by reason of his or her disability, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance29 U.S.C. § 794(a)(1996)

  15. ParentSurveys The Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE), Special Education Services (SES), in collaboration with the Oklahoma Parents Center, Inc. (OPC) annually collects information regarding SoonerStart/Early Intervention and schools’ efforts to partner with parents for the provision of special education and related services. To do this, the OSDE-SES and OPC would like to invite you to complete the Parent Survey. Your responses will help guide our state’s efforts to improve services and results for children and families.
