The Severe Period: 480- 450 BC • simplicity of forms, especially clothes, and absence of decoration; • a feeling of heaviness both in the body and the material of the peplos; • characters are harmonic and idealised; • beauty is conceived as the proportion among the parts; • images reflected the forms of dynamism;not static • simmetry is broken by the arms; • no fixed Archaic smile • Sculptors try to express emotions in their works; • many works are known through Roman copies made in marble. The Greek originals were in bronze; • the bronze is modelled with the technique of the lost wax.
