  1. Cells

  2. Cells are Living Things The cell is the smallest unit of a living thing All living things have these characteristics: • Organization • The ability to develop and grow • The ability to respond to the environment • The ability to reproduce

  3. Needs of Life • Organisms can’t carry out the activities that characterize life without these necessities: • Energy- all organisms require a steady supply of energy to stay alive • Materials- food, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, oxygen, and water • Living space- needs space to live and grow If any one of these requirements are missing, the organism will die

  4. All Living Things are Made of Cells • Unicellular- organisms made from a single cell (these are too small for you to see) Examples: Protists like amoebas, paramecium, and euglena • Multicellular- organisms made from many cells Examples: bats, humans, dogs, and MANY MORE!

  5. Cell Theory • Formed over a long time by many scientists combining their observations and evidence • 1. Every living thing is made of one or more cells • 2. Cells carry out the functions needed to support life • 3. Cells come only from other living cells

  6. Structures of a Cell • Cells are so tiny that it would take about 17,000 bacterial cells lined up to reach across a dime!! • Not all cells have the same structures • Eukaryotic Cell: has a nucleus • Prokaryotic Cell: does not have a nucleus

  7. Structures of an Animal Cell • Animal cells are eukaryotic • Cell Membrane: encloses the cell • Nucleus: contains information a cells needs to function. The “Control Center” of the cell. • Cytoplasm: all the material outside the nucleus but within the cell membrane

  8. Structures of an Animal Cell • Mitochondria: use oxygen to get energy from processing food. “Mighty Mitochondrian!” • Endoplasmic reticulum (ER): makes parts of the cell membrane “Factory” • Golgi apparatus: finishes processing materials made by the ER “Post Office” • Vesicles: move processed materials to Golgi apparatus “Postmen”

  9. Cell Storage, Recycling, and Waste • Cells store water, sugar, etc. which they use to function • Also store waste materials • Lysosomes: contain chemicals that break down old cell parts and materials taken into the cell “Garbage Disposal”
