  4. The Psychologists formula for cheating • CHEATING = SNEAKING + LYING + STEALING • You sneak to conceal what you are up to. • You lie about what you have done • You steal credit for performance you did not earn.

Grouping the cheaters • Low motivated students • Cheat the least, because cheating takes more effort than simply not doing the work at all. • Moderate achieving students • Cheat to get out of doing their own work. • High achieving students • Cheat for competitive advantages as they strive to get ahead.

  7. Teachers may let it go • Because • It takes special surveillance to detect the cheating • They may want to avoid dealing with angry and defensive parents • Policing cheating can stir up trouble

  8. What should schools do • Accept that it will go on • Take an official position against it. • Set and communicate school policies and procedures to prohibit it • School staff must set a school culture that opposes cheating to complete with the adolescent norm that supports cheating.

  9. Now = later • The adolescent of today is the adult of tomorrow. • Cheating one’s way through school can encourage cheating one’s way through life. • Parents and teachers have the responsibility for teaching ethical behaviors in adolescence that encourages ethical behavior in adulthood.
