All Rising 12th students will need 28 credits to graduate: 4 English credits 4 Math credits 3 Sciences/ 4 Social Studies OR 4 Sciences/3 Social Studies (7 total credits) 1 Health and PE 9 credit 8-12 additional electives depending on the student’s chosen Course of Study (including 2 credits of a consecutive Foreign Language or 4 of a Career Pathway * Students must also successfully meet the five NC End-of-Course (EOC) Gateway Requirements, the NC Test of Computer Skills, and the Senior Exit Project.

    5. NC Gateway Requirements Students must score a level 3 or 4 (out of 4) on the five specified EOC’s listed below in order to receive credit for the class and to earn a CMS diploma: English 9 Algebra 1 Biology Civics & Economics (C&E) US History

Career Prep (CRP) 4 English credits 4 Math credits 3 Social Studies/4 Sciences OR 3 Science credits/4 Social Studies (7 total credits) 1 Health and PE 9 credit 4 elective credits in a Career/Technical pathway (i.e. Business, Health, Agriculture, Family/Consumer Science, Technology, Trade/Industrial, Marketing) OR 4 credits in an Arts or JROTC pathway 8 elective credits *No Foreign Language Required

    10. 4. Dual: College/University Prep/College Tech Prep The Dual Course of Study meets the exact core requirements as the College/University Prep, but with one additional component. Students must also take 4 electives from a Career/Technical Pathway out of their required 10 electives. (4 electives would be Career specific and the remaining 6 electives would be general). DUAL is an optional COS for College/University students who choose to take electives from a Career-Specific Pathway.

    12. Basic Information for Rising 9th Graders All freshman entering high school in the fall of 2009 and thereafter will participate in the required Core Course of Study, entitled the Future Ready Core Plus; Major difference: Only 24 credits required for graduation (4 less than before).

Future Ready Core Plus 24 Core Graduation Requirements: 4 English credits 4 Math credits 3 Sciences/4 Social Studies OR 4 Sciences/3 Social Studies (7 total credits) 1 Health and PE 9 4 Concentration Electives 4 General Electives *Must also successfully complete five NC End-of-Course (EOC) Gateway Requirements, the NC Test of Computer Skills, and the NC Graduation Project (formerly the Senior Exit Project). * To meet minimum admission requirements for the UNC University System, a student must complete a specific math sequence, and have a minimum of 2 years in the same foreign language.

    14. Future Ready Core Plus Concentration Electives: 4 credits in one subject area or a cross-disciplinary area, focused on student interests and post-secondary goals; providing an opportunity for the student to participate in a rigorous, in-depth and linked study. The Concentration may include but is not limited to courses in: Career & Technical Ed (CTE) Arts Education JROTC Advanced Placement (AP) International Baccalaureate (IB) Community College Experience via CPCC

    15. Future Ready Core Plus General Electives 4 credits required; Two of these electives must be any combination of courses in: Career Technical Ed Arts Education Foreign Language

    16. February– current MP students participated in classroom guidance and were given registration instructions, and a copy of the student’s transcript. March- registration materials delivered to middle schools for rising 9th graders. Feb. 21- March 16– Current MP students have scheduled meetings with counselors to discuss and return completed registration cards (through their English class period). March 28– MP Counselors will be available from 3-6pm in the Art Gallery to register non-CMS students. March 29 – MP Counselors again will be available from 9am-12noon in the Art Gallery to register non-CMS students. Late March into April- Registration cards from rising 9th graders will be collected by MPHS counselors.

    21. Factors to be considered for level placement: Student’s motivation and willingness to be engaged in the learning process by doing the work requested. Homework and projects completed on time Organization skills Current grades in the courses in question and current level EOG grades Level and amount of extra curricular activities Student’s health and any learning disability

    22. Adheres to the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NCSCS) Provides the student with a basic understanding of the curriculum content Students receive some remedial review of material presented Suggested for students scoring 1 or 2 on 8th grade EOGs No additional quality points

    23. Moves beyond the NCSCOS by adding several additional areas of study Requires students to do much outside reading and many projects beyond the normal classroom requirements Students should be independent learners and highly motivated to learn rather than simply to achieve a grade

    24. Geared towards students making a high 3 or 4 on 8th grade EOGs or high school EOCs. Earns 1 additional quality point

College level courses and exams Potentially earn college level credit depending on the college and exam scores Opportunity to explore college curriculum and improve chances of getting into competitive colleges Very rigorous pace for motivated students MP requires an AP contract for interested students Earns 2 additional quality points

Provides opportunity to pursue a rigorous liberal arts curriculum Students sit for external exams in 6 academic areas during 11th and 12th grade IB differs from AP in that IB is a complete curriculum with specified courses in grades 11 and 12, while the AP program allows students to select courses

    35. English All English 9 courses will be offered on the 4x4 schedule. English 9 standard and honors are paired with Freshman Seminar; English 9 IBMYP is paired with Honors Technology and Arts Skills IBMYP. All English 9 students take the state End-of-Course test at the end of the school year. All English 10 courses will be offered on the 4x4. All English 10 students will take the NC Writing Test on the first Tuesday in March.

    36. English 4 x 4 All English 11 and 12 standard and honors courses will be offered on the 4x4 schedule. Two English electives are offered on the 4x4 schedule: Literature and Film and SAT Prep.

    37. English A/B American Studies (a combined English 11 Honors and US History honors course) meets everyday all year; it is a double blocked course. IB English 11 and IB English 12 are offered on the A/B day schedule. AP English 11 and AP English 12 are offered on the A/B day schedule. English electives that are offered on the A/B day schedule include Newspaper, Creative Writing, Literary Magazine, and Literature and Film.

    51. Foreign Languages (cont) NC and CMS no longer require Foreign Language to graduate from high school. The NC University System and most universities required a minimum of two years and recommend 3 years of the same language for admission.

    52. Foreign Language Rising 9th graders who have taken Level 1 (1A plus 1B) foreign language in the middle school receive a graduation credit. If level 1 is passed and credit is received, the student cannot repeat the course in high school.

    53. Foreign Language AP and IB classes Students who plan to pursue the IB or AP course of study must be in level V by the senior year. Levels IV and V IB and AP will be offered on the A/B day format For IB and AP students it is recommended that Levels II and III be taken during the sophomore year on the 4 x 4 format.

    55. Every student needs to develop a 4-year high school plan. Students’ current math teachers will be utilized to recommend/suggest math courses for the 2010-2011 school year.

    56. Mathematics (cont) Mathematics pre-requisite courses now become ESSENTIAL! Students and parents need to pay particular attention to teacher recommendations in order to ensure student success! It is imperative to plan and choose wisely. Discuss your level choice before submitting your final registration card. When mapping your 4 year plan, decide what math class your want to take during your senior year. Work backwards from senior year to develop your math plan.

Honors credit is offered for Juniors and Seniors Dance I, II, and III are offered
