  2. ~ “Quite a way beyond the outskirts of Munich was a town called Molching.” Munich

  3. ~The people living on Himmel.st enrich our understanding of the communal tapestry they create. The physical support is the vertical strands, the base and strength of the tapestry; Hans Huberman saw that “Frau Holtzapfel was heaving a suitcase, laboriously” he “rushed back to help her” The loom; the base which allows the tapestry of community to be created – these are their homes; “The buildings appear to be glued together, mostly small houses and unit blocks that looked nervous. There is murky snow spread out like carpet. There is concrete, empty hatstand trees, and grey air.” The emotional support is the strands which interlace; down in the basement “soon everyone was holding the hand of another”

  4. ~The journey of life has many streets and Himmel.st symbolises the path of war victims. • For others there was the opportunity of moving on; • Hans Junior “he promptly left the kitchen, and the house…the boy was gone…each step leading to Stalingrad” • Max Vandenburg “he turned onto the side street…and made his way along the footpath,” “you’ve done enough” • The path which Himmels.st lead many of its residences in is the path to death; • Frau Holtzapfel “ended in the kitchen a broken cup infront of her,” • “Michael Holtzapfel knew what he was doing, He killed himself”

  5. ~For Liesel Himmel.st is a place of a new beginning. • For Liesel her life revolves around three main components: • Family, Friends, and Literature “Rudy was always destined to be Liesel’s best friend,” “at school, Rudy made a special point of seeking Liesel out during the breaks” “the midnight classes started,” “start from scratch,” “they progressed through the alphabet,” “four years later, when she came to write in the basement.” “I’m mama number two… and him over there, you call him papa”
