  4. A Revealing Overview

  5. What are New Year’s Resolutions All About? New Year's Resolution Clip Why is it important to set goals? How will they most likely be accomplished? Goals Sheet (due Friday)

  6. A Revealing Overview The book of Revelation is sometimes called “the Revelation (or Apocalypse) of John” because John the apostle is the author. A more accurate title for the book is “the Revelation of Jesus Christ.” John recorded his amazing visions on the island of Patmos, where he had been exiled by the Roman government for his missionary activities.

  7. A Revealing Overview • Revelation starts out as a series of letters to seven churches in present-day Turkey. • Then it precedes to relate a series of dramatic and often-frightening visions of the end times. • As Jesus’ instructions imply, the book falls into two parts: • Part 1: Things that are now happening. • Part 2: Things that will happen later.

  8. Apocalypse Now or Star Wars? Apocalypse means “revelation.” In the Old Testament, a prophet was a spokesman for God. He was given insight into the mind of God and, literally, the message of God. When a prophet spoke or wrote, he was declaring the message of God to the people. After the prophets, God no longer spoke to Israel directly. The hope of God’s kingdom, promised by the prophets, began to fade.

  9. Reflective Writing Assignment #1 If you knew when Jesus was coming back and it was in your lifetime, in what way(s) might that change the way you live? What are three specific things you can/should be doing on a regular basis in preparation for the Lord’s return?

  10. Memory Verse Revelation 21:3 - And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God.”

  11. Memory Verse Revelation 21:3 - And I heard a loud from the throne saying, “! God’s dwelling place is now among the , and he will with them. They will be his people, and himself will be with them and be their God.”

  12. Memory Verse Revelation 21:3 - And I heard a loud from the saying, “! God’s place is now among the , and he will with them. They will be his , and himself will be them and be their .”

  13. Accountability • What is accountability? • Why do you think it is important? List four people in the class you’d be comfortable having in an accountability group.

  14. Jesus Explains the Signs of the Times • Jesus said He would return after three things had occurred: • Jerusalem will be destroyed. • Trouble and tribulation will abound. • The gospel will be preached throughout the world.

  15. Jesus Explains the Signs of the Times Jerusalem was destroyed in A.D. 70. Trouble and tribulation began for Christians shortly after Jesus left the earth and haven’t let up since. The gospel has been preached throughout the world in every generation since Paul and other evangelists fanned out across the known world. Therefore, NOTHING MORE HAS TO HAPPEN TO TRIGGER THE RETURN OF JESUS CHRIST TO EARTH. THE SECOND COMING OF JESUS COULD HAPPEN ANYTIME.

  16. Homework: Reflective Writing Assignment #2 Which of the seven churches can you most related to? Why? Explain how identifying that should impact the way you act in the future?

  17. Memory Verse Revelation 21:3 - And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God.”

  18. Revelation Church - Group Ups Match up with others from the church you wrote about to discuss similarities from the RWA last night.

  19. The Future Can Wait (Revelation, Part 1) Ephesus—”Look how far you have fallen from your first love!” Smyrna—”I know about your suffering and your poverty.” Pergamum—”You have remained loyal to me…and yet I have a few complaints against you.” Thyatira—”I will give to each of you whatever you deserve.” Sardis—”You are dead. Now wake up!” Philadelphia—“I know all the things you do, and I have opened a door for you that no one can shut.” Laodicea—”Since you are like lukewarm water, I will spit you out of my mouth!”

  20. The Future is Coming Soon (Revelation, Part 2) • SEVEN • Churches • Seals • Trumpets • Personages • Bowls • Dooms • New Things • Revelation is about the completion of things, the big wrap-up. Jesus reveals the symbols in patterns of seven as if to make the message crystal-clear: “Don’t wait for the sequel, boys and girls. This is all she wrote!” • Seven represents completion or perfection.

  21. Countdown to Heaven: Seven Last Things 1. The Last Bad Guy: The Antichrist is called the beast, and perhaps the reason he will be so evil is that Satan (the dragon) will give him “his own power and throne and great authority.” -The Antichrist will eventually turn on God and demand that everyone worship him instead. 2. The Last, Bit Test: theGreat Tribulation: the reference is to the tremendous increase in evil in this world as the “last days” approach. -Pretribulation: Christ will return for His followers before the tribulation. -Midtribulation: Christ will return in the middle of the seven-year period before things really get bad. -Posttribulation: Christ returns when the tribulation is over.

  22. Countdown to Heaven: Seven Last Things 3. The Last Disappearing Act: the Rapture and the Second Coming. 4. The Last Roundup: Satan Finally Gets His. -The fiercest battle in history will be fought at Armageddon as the demonic forces of the beast do battle against the Lord and His people.

  23. What About the Millennium? • The word millennium refers to a thousand=-year period of time when Jesus Christ will reign on earth with the saints. • Postmillennialism: The church will bring about peace on earth. Then Jesus will return. • Amillennialism: The thousand-year period of peace is symbolic of Christ reigning in the hearts of believers. • Premillennialism: A literal thousand-year event is sandwiched between the return of Jesus to earth and final judgment.

  24. Countdown to Heaven: Seven Last Things 5. The Last Verdict: the Final Judgment -Revelation refers to the second judgment—the final judgment—as the “great white throne” judgment. And anyone whose name was not found recorded in the Book of Life was thrown into the lake of fire. Revelation 20:15

  25. Countdown to Heaven: Seven Last Things 6. The Last, Worst Place: Hell. Clearly, Jesus taught that hell is a place of eternal torment and punishment waiting for those who reject His message. (Matthew 13:41-42) 7. The Last, Best Place: Heaven. Heaven is a place where God lives. Heaven is where Jesus came from, where He lives now, and from where He will return someday. (Revelation 21:3-5) Heaven will be eternally significant because of what will be absent: tears, sorrow, crying, pain, and death. But MOST SIGNIFICANT will be what Heaven will include: Jesus Christ! Death will be the last enemy to be defeated (1 Corinthians 15:26).
