  2. Outline of the session • Introduction • Assessment - Formative - Summative • SQA Assessment: - Internal Assessment - Course Assessment • Group Work: using the Unit Specifications • Assessment within ‘A Curriculum for Excellence’ • Questions and discussion

  3. Assessment • Formative - to develop autonomous learning - to help pupils learn how to learn - ensures that standards are shared • Summative - to indicate the extent to which pupils have achieved the intended aims of the learning

  4. Formative Assessment • Can be teacher, self or peer assessment • Is based on: - careful questions - thoughtful listening and - reflective responses • Ensures your pupils understand clearly • Gives feedback and advice • Involves your pupils fully • Supports pupils’ progress

Summative Assessment • Takes place when learners have been prepared • Could take the form of: - a review of a piece of class work - an end-of-Unit test - a pass/fail test or examination at the end of a longer period of work - an examination which samples from a range of work and grades performance • Involves feedback

  7. SQA Internal Assessment • Unit Assessment - Unit Specification - NAB (National Assessment Bank OR ASP (Assessment Support Pack) - Centre-devised Assessment • Ensuring standards - Internal Verification - External Verification - Prior Verification • Internal Verification Report

  8. SQA Course Assessment • Combination of: - Internal Assessment (Unit assessment) - External Assessment (final exam) • Arrangement Documents - Course Assessment Pack - Specimen Paper • External Assessment Report • Update Letter • Marking Instructions

  9. Assessment within ‘A Curriculum for Excellence’ • 3-18 - emphasis on flexibility / personalisation - formative assessment throughout • National 4: SCQF Level 4 - internal assessment - no external assessment • National 5: SCQF Level 5 - internal and external assessment • Highers remain at SCQF Level 6
