  4. The first Egyptian wrote on clay and stone, as the Sumerians did. Writing materials Did you know? How did they make the paper? They first cut the inner stalks into narrow strips. The strips were cut into the same length and laid side by side in one layer. Another layer of strips was placed crosswise on top to form a sheet. Soon, they realized that they needed a better surface to write on. To solve this problem, they found a plant called papyrus. Last they wet the sheets, pressed it flat , and dried it in the sun. They used glue from the sap to hold it all together.

  7. Astronomers are scientist who study the stars and other objects in the sky. Ancient Egyptians relied on astronomers to study the stars to predict when the Nile would flood. Keeping track of the stars Are you wondering how they did that? Read on to find out. The ancient astronomers made an important discovery. They noticed a pattern in the sky. When the Nile would flood, Sirius, the Dog Star, would appear. Take a look at the two illustrations to your left. From viewing the sky, astronomers figured out the average time between the appearance of the stars. The conclusion was that there was about 365 days.
