  6. History of the FIFA World Cup • The FIFA World Cup was established by FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football Association). Its main initiator was the French Jules Rimet that was the president of FIFA in 1920-s and the president of French Football Association at the same time. Great Britain didn't send its representatives to the first constituent assembly of FIFA in Paris in 1904, but by the first FIFA World Cup that was held in 1930 this country managed to join FIFA and went out of it because of the disagreement about paying fees to the amateur players. • The application for holding the first FIFA World Cup was submitted by Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and Uruguay. Later the European countries renounced their preliminary applications at the desperate desire of the Uruguayans that were supposed to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the republic's independence exactly in 1930. Uruguay promised to build a new stadium in Montevideo by the FIFA World Cup and incur all traveling and accommodation expenses of all participants of the FIFA World Cup. Nevertheless the European national teams didn't hurry to apply for taking part in the FIFA World Cup being frightened at the thought of a three-week travel overseas. Two months before the FIFA World Cup there wasn't any European teams that agreed to take part in the Cup. Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Chile, Mexico, Bolivia and USA had applied by that time. • The Latin America federations strongly resented such neglect and threatened to go out of FIFA. France, Belgium, Yugoslavia and Romania (pressed by the King Carol) finally agreed to participate in the FIFA World Cup and sailed to Uruguay.
