  5. You are asked to advise a group advising employees about the problems with the unfair dismissal legislation and how can it be reformed. The topic

Think about who you are advising and tailor your advice appropriately • You may only have time to focus on 2 or 3 issues as we are looking for depth and not breadth • Keep the points relevant. • Keep a steady pace and use good quality English • Be prepared to answer questions. What does this mean?

  7. You should ensure that you use relevant cases, legislation, guidance, reports etc. • The main thing: make sure that they are up to date. Check that the law hasn’t changed. • Make sure that they are relevant. Source material

(a) Select and explain current issues in Employment Lawwhich are complex, and conceptually challenging • (c) Devise and sustain an argument, justifying links between appropriate information / data / literature relating to Employment Law • (d) Coherently integrate and evaluate the operation of Employment Law in the wider social, political and economic context, making appropriate proposals for reform. • (e) Critically reflect / analyse own performance in the presentation and identify appropriate strategies for self- improvement and development • (f) Convey complex information clearly and concisely to a professional standard using relevant terminology and accurate OSCOLA referencing Learning Outcomes

Select and explain current issues in Employment Lawwhich are complex, and conceptually challenging • This means: • You need to be able to clearly explain the issues in relation to unfair dismissal and its reform. • The issues need to be up to date. The group is not interested in old law but in the law that affects their members today. What does this mean?

Devise and sustain an argument, justifying links between appropriate information / data / literature relating to Employment Law • This means: • You need to have a clear theme running through your presentation • You need to have a clear structure so that the points are clearly made • It needs to be backed up with relevant and up to date law and statistics etc What does this mean?

Coherently integrate and evaluate the operation of Employment Law in the wider social, political and economic context, making appropriate proposals for reform • This means: • You need to show how the law works in the wider context, particularly economic and how unfair dismissal can affect a business. • You could consider how the process impacts on the individual and their job prospects etc. What does this mean?

Critically reflect / analyse own performance in the presentation and identify appropriate strategies for self- improvement and development • This means: • In the Self Reflection you should be really honest and think about what went right and what didn’t go so well. • You need to set out what you could do differently and think about how you can use this skill in your future career. • You need to be very clear about strategies and timescales. What does this mean?

Convey complex information clearly and concisely to a professional standard using relevant terminology and accurate OSCOLA referencing • This means: • (a) For the presentation you must speak clearly and provide a professional presentation with appropriate aids. • (b) For the self reflection you must explain your points in good quality English. • For both: the sources that you use must be referenced full in accordance with OSCOLA. What does this mean?
