The Services Sector • 81.9% North East workforce currently employed in services sector, including: • Retail • Accommodation and food service • Information and communication • Financial activities • Professional, scientific and technical activities • Education • Administrative and support services • Arts, entertainment and recreation • Boosted by County Durham’s Heritage Corridor, including: • Durham Cathedral • Bowes Museum • Beamish Open Air Museum

  3. Auckland Castle • Auckland Castle, Bishop Auckland • Home to the Prince Bishops of Durham for 900 years • Now being transformed into a world class arts, faith and heritage destination • Helping to attract more than 430,000 visitors to the town every year by 2020

The Future Plans • Auckland Castle Trust is the charity that owns Auckland Castle • It is investing £70m to restore Auckland Castle and create new attractions, including: • - Mining Art Gallery • - Faith Museum • - Spanish Gallery • - Welcome Building • - Walled Garden with contemporary restaurant • Opening in stages over the next 3 years • Requiring a wide range of skills

Get Involved • 8,000 opportunities for employment, skills development and training • This includes: • - Employment • - Apprenticeships • - Work placements • - Volunteering • - Heritage Skills workshops • We are also working with schools, youth groups and other organisations to help develop confidence and skills

Employment with Auckland Castle Trust • 5 employees in 2012 • Now 80 staff and growing fast • Roles include part and full-time, from entry to Director level • Departments include: • - Curatorial • - Marketing & Communications • - Human Resources (HR) • - Facilities • - Projects • - Engagement • - Events and Visitor Services • Vacancies at aucklandcastletrust.org

  8. The Auckland Academy • Partnership between Auckland Castle Trust and Bishop Auckland College • Offering a wide range of apprenticeships with the charity and other employers • 9 apprenticeships are already running at Auckland Castle • 60 more will be created over the next 3 years
