Topic/Main Idea/Supporting Details in Expository Text Objective: The student identifies the topic, main idea(s), supporting details in the text across the content areas and from a variety of appropriate level texts.
Topic - the main thought of a passage. It is a word or phrase to which the ideas of a passage as a whole belong. Main Idea - the gist of a passage, the central thought. It is the most important idea. It is the main point the author wishes to make. It is what the passage is “mainly about”. Stated main idea - a main idea stated clearly at the beginning, middle, or end of a text or paragraph. Inferred main idea - the main idea is not stated directly. Consider whatallof the sentences in the paragraph say about the subject and then decide what the author is saying about it. Supporting Details - the words, facts, figures, or phrases that support an idea or describe a person, place, or thing. Main Idea Notes
