Preparing Solutions with Dilutions. Yes I know that rhymes. Dilution. We use dilutions to prepare new solutions from known volume or concentration of initial solutions The solution with higher amount of solute (moles) at the same temperature and volume is considered more concentrated

Dilution
  • We use dilutions to prepare new solutions from known volume or concentration of initial solutions
  • The solution with higher amount of solute (moles) at the same temperature and volume is considered more concentrated
  • The other solution is considered diluted
dilution formula
Dilution Formula

c1v1= c2v2

Where:

  • c1= the original concentration
  • v1 = the original volume
  • c2 = the new concentration
  • v2 = the new TOTAL volume
example
Example
  • Determine the concentration of a hydrochloric acid solution prepared by diluting 150 mL of concentrated hydrochloric acid (12 mol/L) to a total volume of 2.00 L.
    • What volume of water must be added to the original solution to achieve this new concentration?
