State laws require cosmetology workers to obtain an occupational license, and in most cases that means taking an exam.

  • Cosmetologists must graduate from a 1- or 2-year program.
  • They must pass a licensing examination administered by a state board of cosmetology.

Qualifications:
  • All States require barbers, cosmetologists, and other personal appearance workers to be licensed, with the exceptions of shampooers and makeup artists. To qualify for a license, most job seekers are required to graduate from a State-licensed barber or cosmetology school. Keep work stations clean and sanitize tools such as scissors and combs. You also would need to schedule client appointments.
