  2. What is HIV and what causes it? • HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) weakens the immune system by damaging cells that fight infections and diseases. • HIV is spread when blood, semen, or vaginal fluids from someone who is infected accesses another person’s body. • This is normally from unprotected sexual intercourse, oral sex, an infected mother transferring the disease during pregnancy, sharing contaminated needs for drug use, and sharing infected needles for tattoos and body piercings.

  3. The biology Behind HIV HIV attacks important immune system cells, known as T- helper cells. If the T-helper cells aren’t present, then other cells in the immune system can’t work effectively. This includes B- cells that make antibodies. If this is not treated, then the number of T-helper cells will decrease and the person will start to experience symptoms of Aids.

  4. Symptoms • Nail changes • Yeast infections • Confusion • Difficulty in concentrating • Cold sores • Irregular menstrual cycle • Tingling/weakness • Genital Herpes • Dry cough • Sore throat • Joint pain • Fever • Fatigue • Skin rash • Nausea • Vomiting • Diarrhea • Weight loss • Pneumonia • Night sweats • Headache • Muscles aches

  5. Claim Funding 10 billion dollars for a cure over the next twenty years can be distributed through antiretroviral therapy and other inhibitors to help people who are infected with HIV.

  6. Evidence

  7. How have lives been saved? “In just the past two years, HIV treatment access grew by 63% around the world. The massive scale up over the last 24 months enabled tens of thousands of people living with HIV to receive lifesaving antiretroviral therapy for the first time. The increase came at a time when international funding for AIDS remained flat. Countries are better implementing programmes. They have used a combination of innovation, efficiency and increased domestic investments to sustain the rapid growth in access to treatment. The price of antiretroviral drugs has reduced dramatically from US$ 10 000 per person a decade ago to around US$ 100 annually in some countries”(UNAIDS World AIDS Day Report 2012).

  8. Concerns If a medication isn’t really working for a patient, then the doctor may adjust the dosage or add on more medications.

  9. How we will measure it? We can measure it by keeping track of how the medications are working and the amount of people it is working for.
