  11. Learning - the Swedish way "Interesting subjects, different way of teaching. This was an enrichment in my education. In Lund I did more presentations, wrote more reports and did more group work than I have done in 3 years of study before.“ (quote from former exchange student) Typical instruction: • lectures to groups of 25 to 30 students • One course at a time. • Essay and project work, individually or in a group. • Informal communicative relationship between teachers and students Typical study: Individual reading of set course literature & essay/project work resembling research. Assessment: Essay/project-work is assessed at the students’ presentation of the results which are discussed. Examination may be written and/or oral, individually or in groups.

Lund – the City • a creative crossroads with a down-town area dominated by history • founded in the late 10th century • a leading religious, academic and cultural centre in all of Scandinavia in the 12th century • became Swedish in 1658 • 100,000 inhabitants – half of themwith ties to the University

  18. Lund, Sweden, Europe, the World… Lund is just a 13-minute train ride to the city of Malmö where a bridge ties Sweden to Copenhagen, Denmark - and the rest of Europe. A train ride all the way to Copenhagen can take less than an hour.

More than a third of the population lives in the three large cities, Stockholm, Göteborg, and Malmö. Political system: Constitutional monarchy, parliamentary democracy Religion: 80% belong to the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sweden although society is largely secularized . Currency: 1 krona (SEK) =100 öre. 1 Euro = appr 9 SEK; 1 USD = appr 8 SEK Area: 450,000 km2 (174,000 mi2), larger than California and nearly as large as France or Spain. Distance from north to south is 1,600 km - incorporating wide spectrum of climatic zones.
