Starter 10/19/12 Think about a mile. How long do you think it is? If we started at UPCS, how far down Main St would a mile be? Towards downtown (right)? Towards the other way (left)? Pick a landmark or business you think is a mile away in both directions.

  1. Starter 10/19/12 Think about a mile. How long do you think it is? If we started at UPCS, how far down Main St would a mile be? Towards downtown (right)? Towards the other way (left)? Pick a landmark or business you think is a mile away in both directions. Now, what about 1 kilometer? How far do you think that is? Again, pick a landmark or business you think is a kilometer away in both directions. 2. Starter 10/22/12 On Friday we looked at how far away a mile was from UPCS. We found the YMCA is about a mile down Main St. If Kilby Street is one kilometer down Main St, which is bigger: a mile or a kilometer? How many miles would fit into one kilometer? How many kilometers would fit into one mile? Our walk (or run!) on Friday took various groups different times to do (those of you that kept time like I asked!). One group finished the mile in 16 minutes, another in 17 minutes and 58 seconds and a third in 10 minutes and 23 seconds. IF I then said we were going to walk (or run!) 3 miles (which we’re not), how long would it take those same groups? What about only half a mile? One quarter of a mile? In this investigation, you used several ways to find missing values- approximating with a graph, calculating with a rate, solving an equation, and searching a table. Briefly summarize what you did with each of these methods and then describe which of these methods you preferred and why.
