  1. Future Internet related Projects in China Jun Bi Tsinghua University China Education and Research Network (CERNET) Nov 2009

  2. Contents • Internet Development in China • Some on-going FI related (5-10 vs 15-20 years) projects ~ 1-2 billion RMB • MOST R&D • Science and Technology Supporting Project, 2008- • 973 Fundamental Research Project, 2009- • 863 High-tech Project, 2008- • 12th Five Year Plan Projects (2011-2015) • CNGI R&D and Testbed (National Planning and Reform Committee) • 2008-2010 • Industry oriented, more match funding from industry • Future Projects

  3. Internet development in China • 16 years Internet history from 1994 • before 1994, dial-up to other countries/X.25 backbone and gateway to Internet • First IP backbone in 1994 • Starting late but growing fast. • Internet users in China (by end of June 2009)

  4. Internet development in China • Internet users in China (by end of June 2009): • 338 million users, ranks top 1 in the world • Internet Population: 25.5%, above the global average • Broadband users: 320 million (94.3% of Internet users) • Access Internet by mobile phone: 155 million (46%) • Users in countryside: 95.65 million (28.3%,7.2%) • Still has growing potential (only 25.5% of whole population) • Internet Resources in China (by end of June 2009) • IPv4 Addresses: 205 million • International Connections:747G • Backbone:10G DWDM + Core Routers • Last Miles: Ethernet,xDSL,Cable Modem, WLAN, 3G/2G, etc.

  5. Internet development in China • Internet Users by age

  6. Internet development in China • Internet Users by education degrees

  7. Internet development in China • Internet Users by occupation

  8. Internet development in China • Internet Users by monthly income

  9. Internet development in China • IPv4 address in China

  10. Internet development in China • Network Applicalition

  11. Internet development in China • Network Gaming, Music, Vedio

  12. Internet development in China • Users experienced network security problems

  13. Internet development in China • Major Issues: • Scalability • E.g. China Telecom is already the #1 ISP in the world, how they grow in the next phase • Trust and Security • Mobility – ID/Loc separation • Control, Management and Business Model • 90% bandwidth occupied soon after the bandwidth is upgraded (e.g. a guy was watched in Nanjing downloaded movies that he could not watch in his lifetime) • 90+% revenue comes from 10-% users, then how to provide QoS for those 10-% VIPs who paid most • The Green Internet:IT industry consumes 7-8% of energy in China • How to extend Internet to people in the countryside

  14. Internet development in China • Questions from fast growing Internet industry in China to academics • What’s the Future Internet and how they do in the next phase? • Huawei worries: • Huawei is growing fast but there is no direction for the future, then Huawei has to keep a competitor so that it could be #2 then follow • When Nortel dying, Huawei tried to save it but failed. • If Cisco dies in the next decade, whom Huawei could follow ? • Could academy provides them future R&D directions in Future Internet ?

  15. Research Networks in China • CERNET: China Education and Research Network • 1994-, Managed by MOE, Nation wide backbone • 2000+ Universities and institutes, over 20 Millions users • 2004-, CNGI-CERNET2 (Native IPv6 Backbone) • CSTNET: China Science and Technology Network • 1994, Managed by CAS, Nation wide connections • 100+ Research institutes, Users over 1 Million • 2000- NSFCNET (IPv4/IPv6) • 2003- CNGI (China Next Generation Internet, including IPv6 backbone, campus network, and R&D). CERNET2 is the largest IPv6 network in China and the world • 3TNET (a testbed for Terabit optical, Terabit WDM, Terabit Router + interactive TV), now is announced on July 31 2009 as NGB (not NGN or NGI, it’s Next Generation Broadcasting)

  16. CNGI

  17. 863 Sci&Tech Support Network Application and services CNGI Project Network Equipment and software 973 NSFC NGI and operation FI related Projects

  18. Sci&Tech Support Project: Trustworthy New Generation Internet Trustworthy Network Applications (Email, BBS, VoIP, IPTV/iTV, Mobile App, E-Governence) 、 Trustworthy Network Service (For Trustworthy ID : ID/Loc mapping, AAA, key management, etc) Architectureand Standards Monitoring and Control Trustworthy IPv6 Network Infrastructure (SAVA, 4/6, routing)

  19. Source Address Validation Architecture IETF SAVI WG RFC5210

  20. IPv4 over IPv6 IETF Softwire WG RFC 5565

  21. 973 Fundamental Research Project: New Generation Network Architecture • Internet Architecture: Scalability and Evolution • Large Scale Routing:Trust and Convergence • High Efficient P2P Network • Real-time Transmission in Connect-less Network • Network Management for cross-domain access in complex network

  22. MOST 863 High-tech Project • IP technology based Future Network rather than Future Internet • New Network Architecture • FPBN (ITU-T Y.2601 Y.2611) • NGB(Next Generation Broadcasting) • New Network Service R&D • National Testbed for New Generation Network and Services • New Routing/Switching Tech & Re-constructable Routing/Switching Equipment • Programmable Router Parts • Programmable Router Platform • Development Environment • New Optical Transmission Network • Low-cost Hybrid Access Equipment

  24. Future Projects (2011-2021) • Some proposals on Future Internet to the MOST 12th Five-year Plan Projects (2011-2015) as Phase1 • New Architectures • Common technologies to Implement New Architectures, e.g. Virtualization • Common technologies to Support tested for New Architecture • International collabration with the US, Europe and JK. • In the phase 2, the 13th Five-year Plan period (2016-2021) • Implement a couple of New Architectures by equipments • A tested to run the new architectures.

  25. Conclusion The Internet development in China is fast and we also met many problems. The IT industry hope the academy could provide them future directions CNGI, a major testbed in China Introduction to existing FI related projects in China: fundamental research, R&D, Industry oriented The Future Internet is being considered in future projects (2011-2021)

  26. One last word, Future Internet, the challenge and opportunity for Asia Thank you!
