This is an information evening for parents/carers of Portobello High School S5/6 students to help them make informed choices about their learning pathway. The event will provide information on subject levels, skills development, vocational awareness, and the importance of building a portfolio of qualifications.

  2. Your tracking report will show the level you will be presented at for each subject This will not change unless you bring in a letter from home The deadline for any changes to levels is this Friday Check your Presentation Level!

  3. S5/6 Pathways • Best and shortest path to a successful future • Choices should be unique to each person • The education and employment landscape is changing

  4. Things to consider • The next stage should focus on the following: • Skills development • Increasing vocational awareness • Building towards a future job/course • Gaining a portfolio of qualifications

  5. “People don’t show initiative because nobody told them to” • Skills & Qualities employers are looking for: • Flexibility • Resilience • Initiative with a “can do” solution focus • Good people skills • Good work ethic

  8. 5 columns choose one from each column • Range of levels on offer: • National 5/4 • Higher • Advanced Higher • National Progression Awards • HNC (via Academy programme) • No compulsory subjects: choose subjects that pupils are good at, that they enjoy, that they need for chosen career • 1 period of PSE • 1 period of Skills Development/Wider Achievement S5/6 Curriculum

SQA Skills for Work courses : Creative Industries • More vocational options e.g. Games Design, Cyber Security, Hospitality Practical Cookery, Creative Cake Production • More choices on offer at colleges • Volunteering as course option (leading to SQA Volunteering Award) • Work Experience as course option (leading to SQA Employability Award) • Young Applicants from Schools Scheme (YASS) (Open University) • School Service for S6 Less traditional courses on offer

Delivered by our partners: Queen Margaret University/Edinburgh College • Lead to a range of qualifications up to and including HNC level over a two year period • Academies on offer: • Creative Industries, • Health and Social Care, • STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) • Hospitality and Tourism Academy Models

  11. Count as one of your five options • Benefits include: • being a university student, • Development of study skills • direct entry into year two of HND course at Edinburgh College or Degree Course at Queen Margaret University or Napier University (Engineering Academy) Academy Models

S5/6 Curriculum • S5 • Must choose 5 main subjects, one from each column • 1 period of PSE • 1 period of Skills Development • S6 • Must choose minimum of 4 subjects (one of the choices can be from ‘other options’ section) • 1 period of PSE • 1period of Skills Development • All pupils may select 2 reserve subjects. You can get recommendations from your teachers in these subjects and discuss this with your Pupil Support Leader.

S5 pupils should think about a 2 year plan for S5/6 Continuity and progression- avoid ‘crashing’ Progression can be sideways, different qualifications at the current level Follow recommendations Consider overall workload – a good balance is important S5/6 pupils not able to ‘drop’ subjects Points to consider

Forms will be available in KAG tomorrow They have been pre-filled with your name on You need to fill in all the sections unless you are leaving, then you only need to complete the first section If you are not sure if you are coming back next year, it is better to fill in the form just in case! You cannot choose more than one subject in a column If there is a problem, get a letter from home explaining the problem and we’ll see what we can do It is not ‘first come, first served’ but you are welcome to hand your form in early if it is complete Filling in your form

  15. Cannot guarantee that all courses will run Opportunity to amend course choices following exam results in August Any requests for courses that cannot be accommodated on course choice sheet should be made in writing to Mr Cotter note
