  1. Cummins Power - Insulating Materials Mentor: Robert Rossini Patrick Cleaver Justin Fernandez Ethan Taylor

  2. Type II Gen-set enclosure Air Intake Exhaust Recessed doors

  3. Goals of Design Improved workability • Handling • Ease of installation • Minimize processing steps Improved thermal properties • Maximum service temperature (900°F) • Surface burning characteristics

  4. Product Design Specifications 1. Thermal • Continuous operation at 900 °F • Acceptable surface burning, 5/5 or better (ASTM E-84) 2. Sound • Sound Transfer Coefficient comparable to mineral wool (STC 10) 3. Mechanical • Compressive strength greater than mineral wool is desired (>1.7 psi) 4. Environmental • Must not adsorb water (<1 % by volume) • Must not allow for mold growth 5. Workability • One step installation process • Reduction in manufacturing steps 6. Cost • No more than 2x cost of mineral wool ($14.8/ft3)

  5. Selection Matrix

  6. Expanded Perlite Specifications 1. Thermal • Continuous operation up to 1200 °F • Surface burning 0/0 (ASTM E-84) 2. Sound • STC 11 3. Mechanical • Compressive strength 80 psi 4. Environmental • Adsorbed water <1 % by volume • Resistant to mold growth 5. Workability • One step installation process • Receive and cut processing 6. Cost • $16.3/ft3, 1.1x cost of mineral wool

  7. Sections of Insulation

  8. As-received Material Two available sizes • 152mm x 914mm • 305mm x 914mm Thickness • Ranges from 25-127mm • All thickness are available as-received

  9. Further processing Cutting • 17,500 mm (57.5 ft) Drilling • For mounting on various sections • Some pieces require no drilling

  10. Installation Hardware for mounting • Bolts • Fixtures

  11. Other considerations Disposal of scrap pieces Dust from cutting Dual layers and joining
