  3. Section 3:Metals • What are the physical properties of metals? The physical properties of metals include luster, malleability, ductility, and conductivity.

Metals are: • Good conductors of electric current (electrical conductivity) • Good conductors of heat (thermal conductivity) • Shiny (luster) • Reactive – easily reacts with other substances • Corrosion – the gradual wearing away of a metal due to a chemical reation • Bendable • Malleable – hammered or rolled into flat sheets or other shapes • Ductile – can be pulled out, or drawn, into a long wire • The largest group in the periodic table

  7. Metals in the Periodic Table • The metals in Group 1, from lithium to francium, are called the alkali metals. Alkali metals react with atoms of other elements by losing one electron.

Nonmetal – is an element that lacks most of the properties of a metal • Diatomic molecule – a molecule that consists of two atoms (N2). • Halogen – Group 17 (contains fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, and astatine); “salt forming” • Inert gas – do not ordinarily form compounds • Semimetal – have some properties of metals but also have pr0perties that are typical of nonmetals. • Semiconductor – substances that can conduct electric current under some conditions but not under other conditions.

  21. Families of Nonmetals • Group 15, the nitrogen family, contains two nonmetals: nitrogen and phosphorus. These non-metals usually gain or share three electrons when reacting with other elements.
