What’s the difference? • Between a phrase and a clause? • A phrase is a group of related words that is used as a single part of speech and that does not contain BOTH a verb and a subject. It can’t stand alone. • Examples: • Prepositional Phrases (used as an adj or adv) - to the pool, at the beach, instead of ice cream • Participial Phrases (used as a adj) - watching the clock, peeling the apples, shooting the ball • Gerund Phrases (used as a noun) – bringing me the newspaper, running the 100-meter dash • Infinitive Phrases (noun, adj or adv) – to make tomales, to shoot the ball, to beat the drum
What’s the difference? • Between a phrase and a clause? • A clause is a word group that contains a verb and its subject and that is used as a sentence or part of a sentence • Independent Clauses: express a complete thought and can stand alone as a sentence • Subordinate/Dependent Clauses: do not express a complete thought and can’t stand alone
Decorating your sentence - FANBOYS • Coordinating Conjunctions connect two INDEPENDENT CLAUSES. Meaning: these two sentences could stand alone, but it’s just better if we put them together… BUT! Since they are independent and don’t like to be part of a pair, we need a FANBOYS and a comma to keep the peace! , Complete Sentence FANBOY Complete Sentence For And Nor But Or Yet So Ex. Sally loves One Direction, but she also loves Ne-yo.
Decorating your sentence - FANBOYS • IMPORTANT NOTE: ONLY when FANBOYS connect independent clauses (complete sentences) do they take a COMMA Complete Sentence FANBOY INcomplete Sentence For And Nor But Or Yet So Ex. Sally loves One Direction but also loves Ne-yo. Since “also loves Ne-yo” cannot stand by itself, there is no comma necessary.
