WORKING TEMPERATURES: HEAT, HUMIDITY, COLD, ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES, STRESS, TIREDNESS, IRRITABILITY, ABSENTEEISM. OPEN DOOR POLICIES IN SHOPS, THERMAL CLOTHING. CAMPAIGNING FOR MINIMUM STANDARDS.

  14. Campaigning for the future OUR AIMS: • TO REDUCE THE WORKING DAYS LOST 30% • TO REDUCE INDUSTRIAL ILLNESSES BY 20% • TO REDUCE FATALITIES & MAJOR INJURIES BY10% • TO SUPPORT THE CALL FOR TOUGHER PENALTIES BFAWU - SUPPORTING THE REVITALISATION OF HEALTH & SAFETY.

What will it mean to the Employer? • INTRODUCTION OF THE OFFENCE OF CORPORATE • KILLING. • COMPANIES WILL HAVE TO NAME A H & S DIRECTOR. • DEVELOPMENT OF A COHERANT HEALTH & SAFETY • POLICY. • TOUGHER ON BREACHES OF HEALTH & SAFETY • LEGISLATION-MINIMUM FINES £20,000. WITH AUTHORITY GOES RESPONSIBILITY

  17. HOW CAN WE CONCENTRATE THE MIND OF THE UNSCRUPULOUS EMPLOYER? • HAVE GOVERNMENT CONTRACTS REMOVED • PAY REHABILITATION COSTS • PAY FOR EMERGENCY TREATMENT • PAY BENEFIT COSTS • MAKE PUNATIVE DAMAGES UNINSURABLE • GIVE TAX BREAKS TO THE GOOD EMPLOYER MAKE SURE THE PUNISHMENT FITS THE CRIME

  18. AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT • CLEAR THAT MORE OF THE SAME IS NOT AN OPTION – • NEW LEGISLATION BY ITSELF IS NOT ENOUGH • DELETION OF THE WORDS “REASONABLY PRACTICABLE” • FROM HEALTH & SAFETY LAW • ADOPTION OF A NATIONAL INSPECTION DAY, 1ST OCTOBER
