  1. Prehistoric Peoples

  2. Today’s Objectives • By the end of this lesson, you will be able to answer: • Types of Early Humans and their characteristics • How Early Humans have affected the development of the modern world

  3. Prehistory • Turn to page 6 in the Holt textbook • What types of tools do you think archeologists use? • What are some difficulties they may encounter?

  4. Digging tools • Examples: Shovels, dust pans, sand/soil shifters • Geographic and environmental conditions • Delicacy of artifacts, skeletons, etc.

  5. Anthropologists study the remains of hominids, which include humans and earlier human like creatures • Archeologists study the culture and early peoples, by digging for artifacts

  6. Ancient Civilizations • Set the bar for everything we have today, such as agriculture, art, and religion

  7. Australpithecus (“southern apes”) • In 1974, Lucy (a skeleton) was discovered by Don Johansonand his team • Believed to have lived 3-4 million years ago • 2nd skeleton found by Mary Leakey to be 3.7 million years old (in the late 1970’s • Could walk upright and lived in East Africa

  8. Lucy Skeleton What evidence indicates Lucy might be related to modern humans?

  9. Her upright posture • Structure of her hands, feet, and skull

  10. Beginning of Homo Sapiens • Lived 100,000-400,000 years ago • All living peoples today belong to this species • Ate seeds, fruits, and other plants • Eventually they became hunters • Able to migrate from Africa to Europe and Asia

  11. Neanderthal People • Type of Homo Sapien • Lived in caves of Europe and Southwest Asia, 35,000-130,000 years ago • Wore animal skins for clothing • Used fires for cooking and warmth • More efficient tools than earlier humans (ex. Thrusting spears and scrapers)

  12. MOST IMPORTANT! • Neanderthals were different from earlier humans because they BURIED THEIR DEAD! • With the dead, they buried meat and tools

  13. Cro-Magnon People • Appeared in Europe around 35,000 years ago • Better tools and weapons • Example: Spear-Throwers • Lived on the earth for thousands of years • About 10,000 years ago, Cro-Magnon people looked much like we do today

  14. What do these suggest about their people and culture? Cro-Magnon people were also known for their cave artwork

  15. Back to Today’s Objectives • Name one type of early human (that we discussed today) and two characteristics. • How have Early Humans affected our modern world today?
