  1. SCIENCE EXHIBITION IN CONNECTION WITH THE NAVATHY CELEBRATIONS OFST. BERCHMANS COLLEGE CHANGANACHERRY

Objectives of the programme: • To give vide propaganda to the Navathy celebrations of St. Berchmans College. • Provide the chance for school and college students and the general public to come and interact with us. • Give the chance for the students and faculty members of various departments to work together. • To prove that SB alone can only take such huge tasks. • To get a big plus point in favor of the Extension Programme as directed by the UGC. • To popularize the scope of science and its wide applications and opportunities among school students, university students and to the general public; with the collaboration of all the science departments of the college.

  3. Method of implementation • Fabricating various scientific projects with the help of the faculty and students • Purchasing items having scientific importance from equipment manufacturers. • conducting a five day science exhibition with the collaboration of all the science departments of the college. • To set up “S B Science Center” which is a permanent science exhibition centre for all student groups.

  4. Duration of the programme: • 14 – 19 November 2011 (6 days)

Major Exhibits in different galleries: • Physics Gallery: • Astronomical Telescope, Periscope, Head illusion set up, X – Ray apparatus, Induction coils, Cathode Ray tubes of different properties, Steam Engine, Hyperbola, Hydraulic press, Newton’s Caddle, Resonance apparatus, Magnetic levitation, Kaotic set up, Stroboflash, Color wheel, Total internal reflection using Laser light, Diffraction pattern, Lecher wire setup, Energy conversion, Mini Hydroelectric project, Newton’s wheel, Magic Tap, Musical Fountain, Lift using pulleys etc.

  6. Chemistry Gallery: • Distillation unit, pH meter, centrifuge, vacuum desiccators, Melting point & Boiling point apparatus, Electrolysis apparatus, Water analysis kit, Separating funnel, Kit for different atom models, Fullerence model, Kevlar fibers, Different types of fibers, Models of crystal structures, Different types of cells, Different salt items to demonstrate chemical reactions, Modern periodic table, etc.

  7. Zoology Gallery: • Kymograph, Microtone, Kerosine incubator, Kaledoscope, Collection of agricultural pests, Collection of butterflies and moth, Phyla wise classification of animals, Collection of fauna of Kuttanad, Charts and Animal models of various systems,

Botany Gallery: • Jurassic Park- fossils, models of dainosorus and Jurassic plants, Xylarium, Herbarium, Flora stamps, Model showing the importance of plants, carparium, Model of a plant cell (interactive), Model showing the evolution of plants, Stages of plant tissue culture, stages of mushroom cultivation, Pitcher plant, working model to show osmosis, etc.

  9. Mathematics & Computer Science Gallery: • Models of all geometrical shapes, Tools for fun with Mathematics, Computer hardware parts – (motherboard, Hard disc, Ram, Different software cards), Monitor parts – (Cathode Ray Tube, TFT tube, Plasma tube), Microprocessors, Computer applications, Computer games, Graphical applications (Photoshop, Web design etc. Training kits, etc.

  10. Importance and significance: • St Berchmans College has always remained on the forefront of higher education in Kerala. As it completes the 90th year S B has grown through the years establishing a tradition of excellence. The college through these years of growth has taken great interest in promoting and inculcating the love for science by organizing state level exhibitions.

  11. EXHIBITIONS IN THE PAST • To mark the Silver Jubilee of the Natural Science Departments a grand Science Exhibition was conducted in 1952 in which all the science Departments participated and put up stalls. Students from over a hundred schools and a good number of citizens visited the exhibition.

  12. EXHIBITIONS IN THE PAST • In 1986 the College celebrated the Diamond Jubilee of its becoming a first grade college and the Silver Jubilee of the commencement of Post-graduate classes. • The climax of the celebrations was the Science and Industrial Exhibition conducted from November 14 to December 3. • The industries that participated in the exhibition were: the Indian Railways, Keltron, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Hindustan Machine Tools, The Coconut Research Centre, The Fisheries, Postal and Handicrafts Departments, The ANERT and Medical College Kottayam.

  13. EXHIBITIONS IN THE PAST • A grand Science and Industrial Exhibition was conducted from 19th November to 29th November 1992. • Government departments, leading Industrial Units and Public Sector Undertakings participated in the Industrial Exhibition.

  14. EXHIBITIONS IN THE PAST • The college organized three small-scale exhibitions for the pubic at three different locations to promote the use of Renewable Energy Appliances. • Also the college is cooperating with government agencies for promoting the message of saving Energy on Rajiv Gandhi AkshyaUrga Divas.

  15. Expected outcome • Popularisation of Science among the general public at large & students in particular. • Efforts to achieve scientific literacy in the country. • To inculcate Scientific Awareness & Scientific Temper. • To organise various educational programmes for the benefit of students, teachers & society. • Supporting curriculum based education at school & college level. • Encouraging inquisitive minds to inculcate innovative ideas. • Display & demonstration of progress & achievements in various fields in science and technology.

  16. Category of the targeted group: • High School Students, Higher secondary students, university students and the General Public.
