Honors World LiteratureDay 1 Complete Student Information sheet Syllabus requirements Brief discussion: Summer reading requirements for Anthem and How to Read Literature Like a Professor Anthem: Underpinnings handout Homework: Signed syllabus, bring your Anthem book next class, Socratic Seminar on day 4. • It would be good to have the following: • Dividers for your notebook • High lighters • A jump/flash drive • Notebook paper, pens, pencils, and a binder are absolutely necessary. You will receive numerous papers in class, so organization is critical.

If you did not turn in a syllabus, do so next class.

See handout • Philosophical Concepts in Anthem (handout) • The basis of the discussion for our Socratic Seminar • Concepts to address in the Socratic Seminar • Find one example from the book for each concept. • Small groups: Anthem discussion questions • Choose three questions. • Without writing anything, discuss these three questions as they are relevant to the book and to the modern world. • Back to your own seat: On the back of your handout, use four to five sentences to write your own explanation to these questions. • Hand in to me when you are finished. • Homework: Anthem Socratic Seminar is next class. Bring your book. Make sure you have made your annotations and that you are able to quote the book directly to support your insights with evidence.

Honors World LiteratureDay 5 • Hand in signed syllabus • As a class, read and annotate: Every Trip is a Quest • Evaluate and discuss key ideas in text • What connections do you have to quest stories through novels, movies, and other types of entertainment? • Introduction to Archetypes activity • Form groups of 2 or 3 • Match the character with the archetypal term • Archetype notes: Five stages of the hero’s journey • Homework: Formative timed essay next class over concepts in Every Trip is a Quest

Honors World LiteratureDay 6 • Warm-up: Organizing your notebook tabs • Anthem, Archetypes/Ancients, Greeks/Iliad, Antigone/Oedipus/Plato, Hamlet, Dante’s Inferno, Les Miserables, Research/Writing, 1700’s and beyond, Vocabulary • 30 minutes: In-class timed writing • You will need two sheets of paper: • First sheet: pre-writing and brainstorming • Second sheet: final draft in ink • Using the How To Read Literature Like a Professor handout from last class, explain how Equality follows the five steps of the hero throughout the novel Anthem. While you may not use your book or handouts, please include direct references and examples from the novel. • Continue with notes: Character Archetypes • High-light only the key words from each character, etc… • Homework: None 

Why? • Write your thesis on the TQEET format to guide your writing. • Focus #2:---Find SIX quotes from the text that would fall under the category of your theme. • Put a star beside the top three. • Choose one of these quotes and post it on i-socrative WITH the page number. • Homework: Complete the extended outline draft of paragraph 1 for next class. Typed rough draft of first body paragraph is due on Day 33. • YOU MUST HAVE IT PRINTED BEFORE YOU COME TO CLASS! YOU MAY NOT PRINT HERE.

Honors World LiteratureDay 31 • Paragraph 1: Evaluation • Write your first topic sentence, your lead-in and your first quote on a piece of paper. • Pass this paper to the person to your right. • Without making any reference to the book, explain what you think this quote has to do with the topic sentence? • Pass the paper to the person behind you. • Without making any reference to the book, explain why you think this quote proves the topic sentence to be true. • Evaluate the rest of your own paper to see if your analysis is mere observation or repetition. You will not get a high grade for mere observation. • Homework:Typed thesis and FIRST body paragraph are due day 32 (next class). We will peer edit. • Your paper must be printed out BEFORE you come to class. You may not print in here when you arrive.

  32. Honors World LiteratureDay 32 • Hand in your drafts to me. I will redistribute to those who also completed papers. ( no paper=no peer evaluations) • Peer Evaluation: • Check for the following: • MLA formatting is correct according to handout • Thesis statement is clear, refers to Victor Hugo and Les Miserables, has a theme and a purpose • TQEET format is followed • Lead-ins are developed and enhance the quote, not just introduce the quote. • Parenthetical documentation is correct. • Evaluate the explanations: Do they give depth or just repeat the ideas in the quote? • Check for grammar basics, 1st and 2nd person, and passive voice/be verbs. • Final typed and edited version of paragraph 1 due next class. • Homework: Typed thesis and rough draft of first body paragraph is due day 33. Follow MLA guidelines . This is the ONLY version I will assess prior to the final. • YOU MUST HAVE YOUR PAPER PRINTED BEFORE YOU COME TO CLASS! YOU MAY NOT PRINT HERE. YOU MAY NOT ASK FOR A PASS TO THE MEDIA CENTER DURING CLASS.

Honors World LiteratureDay 33 Today’s Agenda Before you turn in your paper… • Hand in your final typed thesis and first body paragraph • Writing the paper: ELMO: • Looking at samples: MLA format, TQEET format • Body paragraph 2: Read and Research: • Read the packets and pull specific quotes that support your thesis/claim. • Choose no less than SIX quotes from the packets. • Begin completing the second body paragraph with your new quotes. • Homework: Typed draft of second body paragraph is due day 35. • YOU MUST HAVE IT PRINTED BEFORE YOU COME TO CLASS! YOU MAY NOT PRINT HERE. Highlight your lead-ins Circle your documentation Outline your sentences with the TQEETQEET abbreviations. Late work is not accepted for formative assignments and papers will NOT be evaluated by me if they are late.

  36. Directions for Peer Editing Before you give your paper away… -High-light your lead-ins and parenthetical documentation. -Label your TQEETQEET format. Then… • Hand in the papers to me. I will distribute. • Check for MLA formatting in heading, margins, and spacing • Check that all nine elements of TQEETQEET format are correctly placed/labeled. • Evaluate lead-ins and parenthetical documentation. • Evaluate topic sentences and concluding sentences • Evaluate the explanations for depth. • Check for grammatical and structural errors as you read. Finally… At the bottom of the paper, finish the following two statements regarding the writer’s paper. “I really liked…” “I think you should change…”
