2. Chapter 18 Q. What is the cause of the feud between the Grangerfords and the Shepherdsons? A. No one knows the feud has exsisted for generations. Q. Which side started shooting? A. The grangerfords started the shooting. Q. Why is Twain so vague about it? A. Twain is so vague about it because no one knows how it started. Q. Buck tells Huck, �There ain�t a coward amongst them Shepherdsons-not a one. And there ain�t no cowards amongst the Grangerfords either.� What are the drawbacks to this sort of courage? A. The drawbacks are that there has been two deaths of the Grangerfords. Q. What is this topic of the Sunday sermon �satiric�? A. It was satiric because everyone had their riffles between their knees. Q. What has happened to Jim since the last time Huck has seen him? A. Jim has run into slaves that are trying to steal their raft. Q. What does Miss Sophie do? A. She takes Huck to the church to retrieve a copy of the Bible. Q. What happens to the various Grangerfords? A. Some of the Grangerfords are killed during the gun fight. Q. What does Huck do? A. He heads for Jim and the raft, and they shove off downstream.

3. Chapter 19 Q. Read aloud Huck�s description of river life that begins, �Two or three days and nights went by; I reckon I might say they swum by, they slid along so quiet and smooth and lovely.� What causes Huck�s new appreciation of life on the raft? A. The new apprecaition rises from the graititude from being alive throguh all that has happened. Q. The peaceful interlude on the raft is distributed by the the arrival of the duke and the dauphin (the king.) Describe these twp �rapscallions�. A. One of the men was bald with whiskers and about 30 years old. The other man had tar in his teeth, Both men has torn clothing. Q. When the duke and the dauphin first got on the raft, why did they talk to each other and ignore Huck and Jim? A. They did not talk to them because they are planning to lie to Huck and Jim about being from royal descent. Q. Huck says, �It didn�t take me long to make up my mind that these liars warn�t no kings and duckes at all, but just lowdown humbugs and frauds.� Why does he pretend to believe them? A. He pretend to believe them because they are going to get money after.

4. Chapter 20 Q. How does Huck explain Jim to the duke and king? A. Huck makes up a story about how he was orphaned and that he and Jim have been forced to travel by night since so many people stopped his boat to ask whether Jim was a runaway slave. Q. How do the king and the duke treat Huck and Jim? A. They treat Huck and Jim as if they are their servants. Q. What does the king do at the camp meeting? A. At the meeting he tells the crowd that he is a pirate and everyone believes him. Q. How does the duke arrange for them to travel in the daytime? This chapter paints a fuller picture of the two hitchhikers that Huck and Jim have taken aboard. You will remember the Grangerfords were first characterized through their possessions. How are these two men drawn? A. The duke arranges the travels by printing pictures that Jim is a runaway slave and he is taking him back to claim his prize. These men are drawn by letting know that Huck knows who they really are.

Quarrel - an angry dispute or altercation; a disagreement marked by a temporary or permanent break in friendly relations. 4. peppered - to season, sprinkle or cover, as if with pepper; dot. 5. cavorting - to behave in a high-spirited, festive manner; make merry 6. degraded - reduced in rank, position, reputation, etc 7. sprawled - to be stretched or spread out in an unnatural or ungraceful manner 8. cipher -�to decipher 9. sockdolanger - a heavy, finishing blow 10.�benefactor - a person who confers a benefit

6. Dramatic Irony and Symbols Dramatic Irony - Each person had their own nigger to wait on them Buck too. My nigger had a monstrous easy time, because I warn used to having anybody do anything for me, but Buck was on the jump most of the time. This quote shows dramatic irony, in which Huck has more respect for black�slaves than most other people do. Symbol - "Mississippi River"� Huck and Jim find there freedom and feel very relaxed and peaceful�as they travel through the river.� "Other places do seem so cramped up and smoothery, but a radt dont you feel mighty free and easy and comfortable on a raft"(229).�
