What Is Corporal Punishment? • a kind of physical punishment that involves the deliberate infliction of pain as retribution for an offense • used for the purpose of disciplining or reforming a wrongdoer or to deter attitudes or behavior deemed unacceptable • methodically striking the offender with an implement, whether in judicial, domestic, or educational settings.

  4. Why Did We Choose To Advocate Against Corporal Punishment? • We chose to advocate against corporal punishment in the school system. It is important that we provide information about this issue because although it is not used in many states any longer, Arkansas is a state that still exercises this type of punishment in schools. Corporal punishment can cause physical problems and also emotional distress in young children. These things, at an early age, can cause blocks in the learning process and hindering learning at the early childhood level can, in turn, affect learning forever.

Why Corporal Punishment Is A Bad Idea • Promotes Abuse • Lowers Academic Achievement • Does not work • Teaches Violence • Damaging emotionally and physically • Most often hit are low socioeconomic, boys, and those with disabilities • Bruises and Broken bones occur • Spanked kids generally have lower IQ’s

  8. Alternative Forms of Punishment • In school and out of school suspension • Expulsion • Saturday School • Detention • Parent pick-up programs

Students from preschool to 8th grade learn and practice vital social skills like problem solving, empathy, cooperation, and emotion management.
