Main Green House Gases • Natural • 1) Water Vapor – Most abundant • 2) CO2– respiration, ocean-atmosphere exchange, natural fires, and volcanic activity • 3) Methane and trace gases – volcanic activity • Anthropogenic - 1) CO2 - Combustion of Fossil Fuels (Oil, Coal, Natural Gas), deforestation, and wildfires. - 2) Methane – Flatulence from Cattle and industrial pollution

Formation of Fossil Fuels • All formed from ancient living creatures (plants and animals) that were buries deep in sedimentary rock. • Factors that determine type of fossil fuel: • What combination of plant and animal remains were present? • How long they were buried • Amount of Pressure and Temperature present during decomposition.

  16. 5. Ozone Layer • Over 90% of the high energy UV radiation (UVB and UVC) is absorbed during the formation and destruction of the Ozone Layer. • Ozone is O3 and found a layer in the Stratosphere (second layer up from the ground) • CFCs (Chlorofluorocarbons) can destroy the ozone layer
