Chapter 4, Theme 2 Revolutionary War in North Carolina
The Revolution • After the Intolerable Acts the colonist knew there was trouble. • Called Continental Congress, September of 1774, it was apposed by British officials. But NC still sent Richard Caswell, Joseph Hewes, and William Hooper to Philadelphia.
First Continental Congress • Reps from 12 colonies. • How to get Britain to change tax policies. (Fierce) • Declaration of Rights and Grievances sent to King George III. • Condemned Brits, and colonist had the right to run local affairs. • Create Committees of safety to run local affairs.
“The Shot Heard Round the World” • Second Continental Congress May 1755. • Managed colonial war effort • Same reps went • Heard that on April 19thBritish troops seized store of ammunition in Boston. • After Paul Revere rode to the Lexington to warn others that the British were coming. • When the Brits arrived in Lex, local militia waiting. • The fought
8 colonist died. • Brits moved to Concord, more militia waiting. Because of Revere. • Colonist took cover behind trees, barns and stone walls.
Battle of Bunker Hill • British went to Boston, across the river was Bunker Hill. • Colonist dug trenches in the hill. • British had to climb hill to attack • “Don’t fire until you see the whites of their eyes” • Brits at the top of the hill, colonist fired • Brits lost 1,00 men/colonist 450 • Brits won the hill.
North Carolina Takes Action • New Bern, went to Gov. palace and carried off cannons. • Gov. Josiah Martin feared being attacked, fled (First Royal Gov. to flee a colony) • Soon after colonist burned down Ft. Johnston, one of Britain's key military strongholds in the colonies.
Mecklenburg Resolves • May 31, 1775 Mecklenburg County passed a set of resolutions, Mecklenburg Resolves. • All laws given by the King or Parliament are annulled and vacated • Civil Constitution suspended. • Good conduct was enforced until laws were created by Congress • First official rejection of British rule.
Continental Army • Created in June • Appointed George Washington as leader.
Which Side? • Colonial leaders and British officials moving toward war. • Most resisted Brits (Regulators), others not sure(New immigrants). • Enslaved people, no reason to support colonist…why?Freedom? • Indians, leery of colonist. Why? Who was invading their land? • North Carolina remained divided through Revolution.
