  2. Challenges • Dense Forests • Had to clear • Damp hot climate • Mosquitoes/ Malaria • Dangerous jobs • Logging • Hunting • seafaring • Widowed several times

  3. Colonial Women • Ann Durant was first female lawyer in Colonies, among other jobs. • Women had to work hard to help survive in the colonies. Do a man’s job often. • Had very few rights • When married husband took control over her belongings. Called coverture. • Story of Diana Harris Forester….

  4. Religion in the Colony • Anglican was official church of England. • Quakers dominated so they built their own institutions.

  5. Colonial Government • Fundamental Constitutions of Carolina • Appoint a governorto rule a colony • Colonist who owned 50+ could vote for people that created laws • Gov. chose members of a councilthat helped enforce laws • People wanted to use Americas to make England rich • Colonist did not want to please aristocrats. • Difficult to find an honest man to serve.

  6. Culpeper’s Rebellion • 1677 • Tensions became armed rebellion. • Colonist and Proprietors clashed over laws, Navigation Act. • Colonist had to ship products to England using English ships • Gave England a monopoly on American Resources. • Imposed taxes to enforce regulation

  7. Colonist shipped to Boston and Indies, not to England • Used ships that offered the best prices. • Carolina Colonies just ignored the law, England was far away.

  8. Thomas Miller • Miller was sent as governor to enforce Navigation Act • Seized cargos • Imposed fines • Jailed those who challenged • Sent ship to patrol Albemarle sound for smugglers.

  9. Miller tried to arrest Durant, and the colonist got MAD!!!! • Durant and Surveyor General John Culpeper, led a group of armed men and captured Miller. • Imprisoned him and other English officials • Colonist created their own assembly the met at Culpeper's house • Became known as Culpeper’s Rebellion

  10. Miller escaped to England • Culpeper followed to defend rebels. • England let it slide because they did not want to lose land, sent a new Governor, but he was captured by pirates, sis not arrive for years. • Carolina Colonist governed themselves.
