  12. What’s Different About AP Courses? • AP courses provide COLLEGE-LEVEL curriculum. • Requires more independent work outside of class • Can pay to take the AP exam in May for potential college credit • AP Exam scores range from 1 - 5 • Students scoring a 3, 4, or 5 may be eligible for college credit. All public universities in Texas are required to give credit for scores of 3 or higher.

  13. Should I Sign Up for On-Level or Pre-AP/AP in a Subject? • Pre-AP/AP provides additional weight points and colleges like to see these on your transcript if you do well. • Consult with your teachers in that subject area; they know your abilities and study habits best. • Talk with your counselor and your parents. • Pre-AP/AP schedule changes only allowed after first six-weeks grading cycle and at semester. No exceptions.

  14. Remember….keep a good balance! • SO IMPORTANT!!  In order to have a happy, healthy mind, you need to have balance in your life.  Too many PAP and AP classes can cause you to lose sleep and become anxious.  There are only so many hours in a day that you are not in school.  You need to keep a balance between school and downtime in order to be able to function.  Just because your friend is doing something doesn’t mean you have to do it, too.  Grades are important, but not all that colleges are looking for.

  15. What is the AP CAPSTONE Program? AP Capstone is a two year program comprised of two AP courses — AP Seminar and AP Research — and is designed to complement and enhance other AP courses. Both courses focus upon college-level composition, analysis, and research. AP Seminar can be taken as a sophomore or junior. It will count as an additional social studies credit. Group work is a huge part of the class. AP Research expands upon the research and writing opportunities explored in Seminar and culminates in a major research portfolio and essay. *The AP Research course is recommended for students who are entering their senior year of high school.

  16. Earning a AP Capstone Diploma • In order to earn the AP Capstone Diploma™, students musts earn scores of 3 or higher on the AP Seminar and AP Research exams, and also must earn scores of 3 on four additional AP Exams of their choosing. • Students who earn scores of 3 or higher in AP Seminar and AP Research but not on four additional AP Exams receive the AP Seminar and Research Certificate™.

  17. Check your potential college’s AP credit policy • Find colleges and universities that offer credit or placement for AP scores. You should research this in advance. https://apstudent.collegeboard.org/creditandplacement/search-credit-policies

  18. Class Rank & GPA coming soon! • Your GPA points come from your SEMESTER grades. • Your Rank is determined by your GPA. • Refer to the Academic Guide for full GPA guidelines. • Class rank/GPA for 9th graders will be posted to Family Connection and HAC in mid-February.
