Internationalization of HE in Africa • Globalization/Internationalization- old phenomena/new realities • Main drivers of change in HE • Varied definitions and meanings • Diverse implications for HE in different contexts • Varied manifestations/developments in Africa • Africa responds in ways peculiar to its circumstances • Differing rationales, challenges, risks etc • New opportunities, attendant risks & challenges • Internationalization is not only unavoidable but inevitable • Worldwide, it is a central issue in HE • Africa is part of golobalized world • Has to respond to opportunities & challenges of internationalization • Institutional, national, international strategies. • Fragmented & weak capacity

  3. The university must become a primary tool for Africa’s development in the new century. Universities can help develop African expertise; they can enhance the analysis of African problems; strengthen domestic institutions; serve as a model environment for the practice of good governance, conflict resolution and respect for human rights, and enable African academics to play an active part in the global community of scholars. (Kofi Annan, Quoted in Bloom et al, 2006).

Constructing ANIE • Project on international dimension of HE in Africa • Ford Foundation & Carnegie Foundation • 15 African countries • To develop 15 country case studies • Meetings & consultations across Africa • Book- Higher Education in Africa: The International Dimension • Edited by Jane Knight & DamtewTeferra • New knowledge & identification of gaps • Establishment of ANIE in April 2008- Nairobi meeting

  5. Structure • ANIE is a membership based African network • Membership- Individual, affiliate • A Governing Board of 6 members from different parts of Africa • AGM • Special Interest Groups e.g. NESI • Secretariat – based at Moi University • Membership is from across Africa

  6. Main Activity Areas • Research • Capacity Building • Advocacy • Information sharing e.g AFIRE, • Professional development • etc ……on the international dimension of HE in Africa

  7. Research • Publication of the book – 11 country chapters and 8 analytical • IIE – publication by ANIE members • IAU - publications by the NESI • MRCI grant to support research • 11 completed researches • Research team put together • There is much more to be done • Research strategy?

Research -Challenges • Inadequate and fragmented capacity • Synergy and complementarity • No single country has adequate capacity • Research in HE new in Africa • Link research & practice • Links with other related orgs • Catalyst for sensitization • Research culture • Funding • Developing and sustaining research networks • The new generation

Capacity Building • Done through workshops • Mainly done through NESI • 1st NESI Capacity Building Workshop in September 2009, MoiUniversity- Understanding of internationalization, Student mobility & Facilitated by IIE & ECE • 2nd NESI workshop, 2 & 3rd November 2010, Kampala, Uganda on Research & utilization of OERs • 3rd Workshop 16th November 2011- Developing Strategies for Internationalization (Jointly with IAU) • 4th Workshop April 2012 – Practitioners/ International Offices • Main target young scholars & special interest groups • Outcomes – enhanced capacity/ support to young scholars • Deliverables- workshop reports/ ADEA support • Scaling up of capacity building • ANIE Research team developed

Conferences • 1st Conference in 3-4th September 2009 – MoiUniversity- Trends, challenges and realities of internationalization of HE in Africa • 2nd Conference on 4th & 5th November 2010- Kampala, Uganda- Internationalization of Higher Education in Africa: Responding to opportunities & challenges • 3rd Conference in 25th-26th October 2011- Abuja, Nigeria (jointly with BC/NUC)- Internationalization in Africa: Where to Focus Funding and Create Real Impact in the HE sector in SSA • 4th Conference, September 2012 – University of Pretoria, South Africa
