Britain • Britain was no longer the leading industrial nation in Europe. • Big parts ofmerchantfleethadbeen sank during the war. • Big debtto USA. • Rising unemployment. • War veterans resentedgovernmentwhentheycould not get jobs. • New rulesaboutelections. 1918: General suffrage for men over 21. 1928: Women got the right tovote. • Riseof the left in politics.- Moreworkersvoting.- Labour Party gets morevotes.- Liberals loosingvotes.- 1924: Firstever Labour-government.

France • Francehadlost 1,5 million soldiers in the war. • Manyciviliansdiedduring the war. • ManyFrenchwantedrevenge on Germany.- Versailles Treaty.- Occupationof Ruhr in 1923. • Politicswere in crisis.- 40 different governments in between 1919 and 1939.- Extreme natonalisticparties, such asLa ligue des Croix-de-feuand Action Francaise.- Leftistpartiesjoinedforces as ”People’s Front”. • Women got the right tovote in 1945.

Italy • Italyhadjoined WW1 toAllies’ side in 1915.- HighhopesaboutgainingpowerbecauseItalywas on winningside.- ResentmentwhenItalyfailedtogainadvantagewithpeacetreaty. • Economic problems and unemployment. • Politicalunrest in NorthernItaly.- Socialists occupyingfactories. • 1922: Fascist Party, ”The Black shirts” marchedintoRome- Benito Mussolini wasappointedPrime Minister by the king.- ”Il Duce” – ”The Leader”. • Emergencylaw in attempttogain order in the country. • All opposition wassilenced and all otherpartieswerebanned. • Mussolini wascelebrated as the strong leaderItaleneeded. • Mussolini’sideaof”MareNostrum”.- Power aroundMediterranean Sea.- Warwasnecessary in order togainpower.

Spain • 1936: Extreme Right starts uprisingagainst the Spanishgovernment. • Uprising is lead by General Francisco Franco. • This is the start of a Civil war.- Nationalistic sidewas supported by Italy & Germany.- Republicansidewas supported by Soviet Union.- Manyvolunteers from different countries, • Civil warlasted for 3 years. • Franco won and introduced a fascist dictatorship in Spain.

Sweden • 1921: Women got the right tovote. • Both Liberals and Social Democratshadwantedthis reform. • Parliament (Riksdagen) haddifficultiestowork.- Conflictbetween Socialist and Right-wingparties. • Economywentup and down. • After 1932 election Social Democratsgainedpower.- Per Albin Hansson’sOne-party-government- Crisispoliticsworking.- Unemploymentreduced. • Vision ofPeople’shome, ”Folkhemmet”.- Welfare politicsof Social Democrats.
