  2. Overview of the Campaign • Goal: Observe the vertical profile of brown clouds and clouds over the Hanimadhoo observatory and measure the horizontal gradients of brown clouds and cloud properties; both North into the Arabian sea and South of Hanimadhoo into South of equator at least to Gan. • II. Duration • October 15 to November 15 • III. Platforms: • Primary Platform: Island Aviation Dornier Aircraft • Supporting Platform: Autonomously flying Unmanned Aircraft Vehicle • Validation Data : Provided by ABC-MCO at Hanimadhoo and Gan Islands • IV. Flight Plans: • During the first half (Two weeks) Dornier will fly one day and the UAV the next day. • The UAV flight will be scheduled at least two hours before any commercial flights take off or land. Each UAV flight will last for less than one hour; There may be about one to three flights each day when the flight is scheduled. • During the latter half of the campaign (last two weeks), depending on the success of UAV flights, we would like to have Dornier and UAV on the same day.

  3. Aircraft Questions for Dornier • Flight Altitude Ceiling: Desired : 12000 ft; Minimum : 8000 ft • Altitude Range of flights : 500 ft to 12000 ft or 500 ft to 8000 ft • Flight Duration : 4 hours or 6 hours: Desired : Flexible to range from 2 hours to 6 hours • Flight Range ? : 800 miles round trip: Desired : Flexible: Deatiled vertical profiling over the observatory to long range round trip flight (about 350 nm each way) north and south from Hanimadhoo • a) How far into Arabian Sea Can it be flown? b) Round trip from Hanimadhoo to Gan and back? • Guidelines: 65 Hours • Flight Times: What are the limitations? Can night time flight be possible? • What Flight Data can we get? Met variables; pitch, yaw and roll? • Can we record GPS data from aircraft?

  4. Aircraft Questions for Dornier: Response from Island Aviation • Flight Altitude Ceiling: Desired : 12000 ft; Minimum : 8000 ft . They can do definitely 10000 ft; and will try for 12000 ft. • Altitude Range of flights : 500 ft to 12000 ft or 500 ft to 8000 ft: OK • Flight Duration : 4 hours or 6 hours: Desired : Flexible to range from 2 hours to 6 hours: OK • Flight Range ? : 800 miles round trip: OK Desired : Flexible: Detailed vertical profiling over the observatory to long range round trip flight (about 350 nm each way) north and south from Hanimadhoo • a) How far into Arabian Sea Can it be flown?: About 400 nm each way b) Round trip from Hanimadhoo to Gan and back? May require refuelling at Male • Guidelines: 65 Hours: OK • Flight Times: What are the limitations? Can night time flight be possible?: They are flexible • What Flight Data can we get? Met variables; pitch, yaw and roll?: Nothing; they do not have any recorders • Can we record GPS data from aircraft?: No; we need to bring our own.
