  2. Leadership 15 years as a full time practising farmer, with a wide involvement in community affairs. This provided good lessons in: • Practical decision making • Taking risks • Working with limited resources • How to be effective

  3. NZ Kiwifruit Industry- 1992 Crisis • BELIEF that an outcome was possible, that I could do the job. • JUDGEMENT – to make the right calls when it was really difficult. • INTEGRITY – to rebuild trust that had been shattered by a series of events and poor communication.

  4. Wrightson Ltd- a dysfunctional company • COURAGE – to change some key workings of the board and senior management, and to reverse some company strategies. • CLARITY – to ensure that staff and customers were aware that we had recognised the mistakes, and were doing something about it.

  5. Air New Zealand Ltd- Financial Crisis 2001 Key elements needed: • CULTURE – Removing the old culture of privilege in management, and focussing on customers. • TEAMWORK – Creating a sense of team and responsibility • NEW BUSINESS MODEL – A complete re-look at how the business was structured.

The Dance of Leadership – The call for soul in 21st century leadership by Peter Cammock • Cammock stresses the importance of EQ (Emotional Quotient) as opposed to IQ (Intelligence Quotient) as a key ingredient in effective leadership. He describes the critical characteristics of leaders are: Integrity Faith Passion Courage

  9. Leadership • Leadership then is all about people • Leadership is not an academic exercise • Leadership is mostly about commonsense and judgement. • It’s fun and personally fulfilling
