  3. How to Choose an IOP topic • Discuss subjects/books/speeches you found interesting • Review notes. • Reflect • Create a specific thesis • Subject-opinion-plan

  4. Wrestling with a topic • Cultural setting of the work & related cultural issues • Thematic focus • Characterization • Techniques & style • Author’s attitude to particular elements such as character or subject matter • Interpretation of particular elements from different perspectives

  5. Your TOPIC & THESIS must be approved by me!!!

  6. There can be NO duplicate topics. • Choose yours before someone else does!

  7. Areas of Focus • Cultural setting of the work & related issues • Thematic focus • Characterization • Techniques & style • Author’s attitude to particular elements such as characters and subject matter • Interpretation of particular elements from different perspectives

  8. Examples of IOP topics Explanation of particular aspect of author’s work Examination of particular interpretation of work Setting of work against another bod of material ( social or political views) Commentary on image, symbols, idea in work Comparison of 2 different extracts Interpretation with different perspectives Commentary on an extract Presentation of 2 opposing readings of work Monologue/ dialog by character at important point in work Author’s critical defense of work

Ideas • Introduction of the writer or work • Explanation of particular aspect of author’s work • Examination of a particular interpretation of a work • Setting of a particular writer’s work against another body of material ( such as details on social background or political views) • Commentary about a particular image, idea, symbol. • Comparison of 2 characters 2 passages, two works

  10. Requirements • 10 -15 minutes long • Review your IOP rubric • I score this. • This score, called an INTERNAL ASSESSMENT, along with your Individual Oral commentary score ( 12th grade ),will be submitted to IB • I will grade like an “official” IB scorer

  11. References • Your presentation must include a list of references • DO NOT cut & paste from internet. • I can tell. • You will get a letter in your file. • You will disqualify yourself from the program because you must have an IOP grade

  12. Say “no” to plagiarism!

  13. Criteria • 1. Knowledge & understanding of work(s) • 2. Effectiveness of Presentation: Includes audibility, eye contact, gesture, supporting detail • 3. Language: Register & style. Includes vocabulary, tone, sentence structure, terminology 10-15 minutes in length

  14. .Avoid last minute HELL • Prepare, prepare, prepare • A passing score CANNOT be accomplished if you only allow a weekend • If a job is worth doing, it is worth doing well. • If you totally botch it, I will let you know, and possibly let you have a do-over ( at my discretion)

  15. When? How? • Time permitting, there will be a brainstorming day. • Random selection process. • You will prepare a topic AND a thesis for approval. ( Have a back up or 2…or 3) • If topic/thesis is NOT approved you go to the back of the line! OR must come in during lunch.
