  2. Line • The most basic element of design • Lines form the edges or outlines of objects or areas • They show direction & cause the eye to move from one point to another

  3. Lines • 1. Horizontal • 2. Vertical • 3. Diagonal • 4. Curved

  4. Horizontal Lines • These lines are parallel to the ground. • They direct your eyes across. • These lines communicate feelings of: • Relaxation Calmness Restfulness • Examples: sunsets, mantels, blinds, bookcases, sofas, and wall paper

  5. Vertical Lines • These lines are perpendicular to the ground • They cause your eye to move up and down • This movement suggests height, strength, dignity and stability • Examples: Curtains, striped wallpaper, grandfather clocks, armories, frames and tall mirrors.

  6. Diagonal Lines • These are lines that angle between horizontal and vertical • They communicate different levels of activity, ranging from low to high depending on the degree of the angle • Example:A Lighting Bolt-communicates action, excitement, and sometimes agitation • The use of diagonal furniture placement in a floor plan brings movement, interest, excitement and can enhance a conversation area

  7. Curved Lines • They are the 2nd major type of line • It is part of the circle or oval • The different degrees of the curves communicates different ideas • Curved lines seem softer than other lines. • Reflects organization, eternity, uniformity, freedom and openness

  10. Form • Defined as is the physical shape of objects. • It outlines the edges of a 3 dimensional object and contains volume & mass • Form also has height, width, and depth There are 4 types of Form: • 1. Realistic 2. Abstract • 3. Geometric 4. Free

  11. Realistic Form • Communicates a lifelike, traditional, and familiar feeling Example: A chair has realistic form because of its specific form. It is easily recognized as a chair. Example: Fruit sitting on a table or painted on a picture

  12. Abstract Form • Rearranges or stylizes a recognizable object • The abstract item has traits that look like the real item, but altered. • Abstract form communicates a contemporary, changing, creative, and artistic feeling.

  13. Geometric Form • Uses squares, rectangles, circles, and other geometric figures to create form • It communicates organization, order, planning and a tailored look. • Examples:Square tables, round lampshades, and various shaped pillows.

  14. Free Form • Is random and flowing • It is found nature, such as: • In plants, stones, and wood • Communicates a sense of freedom • Untraditional, unfamiliar, and different from realistic form

  18. Space • Refers to the area around a form such as the area around a table. • It also refers to the area inside a form. • Need to consider size of the space as well as the arrangement.

  19. Size of the Space • The size of interior space is often defined by its height, length and width • The size will affect how many people will use the room and how it will be used. • The size of a room can also give off negative or positive feelings • Large spaces can communicate feelings of openness and freedom. But they can also make you feel small, lost or overwhelmed.

  20. Smaller Spaces-can make you feel cozy, intimate, or comfortable. If more people and furnishings are added to a small room, it might feel very crowded. • To expand space you can use mirrors, windows or have an open wall. • To make a large room feel cozier you can use area rugs, cluster furniture or add a wall or screen. • Be careful poor divisions of space can create an unorganized or confused feeling.

  22. MASS • IS THE AMOUNT OF PATTERN OR OBJECTS IN A SPACE. • It also refers to how crowded or empty a space appears. • A SPACE CAN HAVE HIGH MASS OR LOW MASS

  23. HIGH MASS • REFERS TO A SPACE THAT IS VISUALLY CROWDED • A LOT OF PATTERN OR LINES IN FABRIC OR DESIGN OF ROOM • HIGH MASS MAY REFLECT FULL, CROWDED, OR CLUTTERED FEELING • THE IMPRESSION COMMUNICATES FORMALITY

  24. LOW MASS • REFERS TO A SPACE THAT IS SIMPLE AND SPARSE • IT IS THE OPPOSITE OF HIGH MASS • ONLY THE ESSENTIAL FURNISHINGS ARE USED • IT COMMUNICATES A CLEAN AND AIRY FEELING

  25. USING MASS IN THE HOUSE • EITHER HIGH OR LOW MASS CAN BE USED TO CREATE A STRONG DESIGN STATEMENT • BLENDING HIGH & LOW MASS CAN CREATE VARIETY IN A ROOM

  27. TEXTURE • Refers to the way a surface feels or appears to feel • There are two kinds of texture • 1. Tactile 2. Visual

  28. Tactile Texture • It is how the surface feels to the touch • You can see & touch tactile texture • ------------------------------------------------------ • Feel its roughness and coolness, and • See its ridges and crevices

  29. Visual Texture • Is texture that you see, but cannot feel. • -It can be found in scenic wallpaper of fabric patterns as well as in pictures. • Example: picture of a mountain hanging on a wall

  30. Using Texture in Housing • You can use specific textures to communicate different feelings in a room • Example: • -Rough surfaces such as cedar paneling, plaster or paint treatments can create a more casual feeling • Smooth surfaces such as glass, polished wood or brass, may communicate an elegant feeling • Polished stone or marble can communicate both elegance and strength
