THE EIGHTH COMMANDMENT: Love for Reputation, a good name
A TRUTH TO REMEMBER: God wants us to have a good reputation, especially since we represent Him as Christians.
CHRISTIANS WILL GUARD THEIR TONGUES God has given the Eighth Commandment to protect the honor and reputation of all people. He demands that we do not to hurt our neighbor’s good name.
2 Samuel 15:1-6 1 In the course of time, Absalom provided himself with a chariot and horses and with fifty men to run ahead of him. 2 He would get up early and stand by the side of the road leading to the city gate. Whenever anyone came with a complaint to be placed before the king for a decision, Absalom would call out to him, "What town are you from?" He would answer, "Your servant is from one of the tribes of Israel." 3 Then Absalom would say to him, "Look, your claims are valid and proper, but there is no representative of the king to hear you." 4 And Absalom would add, "If only I were appointed judge in the land! Then everyone who has a complaint or case could come to me and I would see that he gets justice." 5 Also, whenever anyone approached him to bow down before him, Absalom would reach out his hand, take hold of him and kiss him. 6 Absalom behaved in this way toward all the Israelites who came to the king asking for justice, and so he stole the hearts of the men of Israel.
Proverbs 19:5 5 A false witness will not go unpunished, and he who pours out lies will not go free.
John 8:44 44You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
Christians Will Guard Their Tongues 1. We will not want to slander or lie about others.
Proverbs 11:13 13 A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy man keeps a secret.
James 3:2-12 2We all stumble in many ways. If anyone is never at fault what he says, he is a perfect man, able to keep his whole body in check. 3When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. 4Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. 5Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.
James 3:2-12(cont) 6The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. 7All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and creatures of the sea are being tamed and have been tamed by man, 8but no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God's likeness. 10Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be. 11Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? 12My brothers, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.
Christians Will Guard Their Tongues 1. We will not want to slander or lie about others. 2. We will not want to speak unlovingly about anyone, even if it is true (gossip).
Ephesians 4:15 & 25 15Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ. 25Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for we are all members of one body.
Christians Will Use Their Tongues Kindly 1. To speak the TRUTH IN LOVE.
1 Samuel 19:1-6 1 Saul told his son Jonathan and all the attendants to kill David. But Jonathan was very fond of David 2 and warned him, "My father Saul is looking for a chance to kill you. Be on your guard tomorrow morning; go into hiding and stay there. 3 I will go out and stand with my father in the field where you are. I'll speak to him about you and will tell you what I find out." 4 Jonathan spoke well of David to Saul his father and said to him, "Let not the king do wrong to his servant David; he has not wronged you, and what he has done has benefited you greatly. 5 He took his life in his hands when he killed the Philistine. The LORD won a great victory for all Israel, and you saw it and were glad. Why then would you do wrong to an innocent man like David by killing him for no reason?" 6 Saul listened to Jonathan and took this oath: "As surely as the LORD lives, David will not be put to death."
1 Peter 4:8 8Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.
Ephesians 4:29 29Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

Christians Will Use Their Tongues Kindly 1. To speak the TRUTH IN LOVE. 2. To always say what is BEST for others.
Application • John said to his pastor, “Pastor, Mrs. Smith is always saying bad things about others. Will you come with me to talk to her about it.” What does his pastor say?
THE NINTH AND TENTH COMMANDMENTS: Love for Godly Contentment
A TRUTH TO REMEMBER: God is as concerned about our thoughts and desires as He is about our words and actions.
1 Kings 21:1-16 1 Some time later there was an incident involving a vineyard belonging to Naboth the Jezreelite. The vineyard was in Jezreel, close to the palace of Ahab king of Samaria. 2 Ahab said to Naboth, "Let me have your vineyard to use for a vegetable garden, since it is close to my palace. In exchange I will give you a better vineyard or, if you prefer, I will pay you whatever it is worth." 3 But Naboth replied, "The LORD forbid that I should give you the inheritance of my fathers." 4 So Ahab went home, sullen and angry because Naboth the Jezreelite had said, "I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers." He lay on his bed sulking and refused to eat. 5 His wife Jezebel came in and asked him, "Why are you so sullen? Why won't you eat?"
1 Kings 21:1-16 6 He answered her, "Because I said to Naboth the Jezreelite, 'Sell me your vineyard; or if you prefer, I will give you another vineyard in its place.' But he said, 'I will not give you my vineyard.' " 7 Jezebel his wife said, "Is this how you act as king over Israel? Get up and eat! Cheer up. I'll get you the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite." 8 So she wrote letters in Ahab's name, placed his seal on them, and sent them to the elders and nobles who lived in Naboth's city with him. 9 In those letters she wrote: "Proclaim a day of fasting and seat Naboth in a prominent place among the people. 10 But seat two scoundrels opposite him and have them testify that he has cursed both God and the king. Then take him out and stone him to death."
1 Kings 21:1-16 11 So the elders and nobles who lived in Naboth's city did as Jezebel directed in the letters she had written to them. 12 They proclaimed a fast and seated Naboth in a prominent place among the people. 13 Then two scoundrels came and sat opposite him and brought charges against Naboth before the people, saying, "Naboth has cursed both God and the king." So they took him outside the city and stoned him to death. 14 Then they sent word to Jezebel: "Naboth has been stoned and is dead." 15 As soon as Jezebel heard that Naboth had been stoned to death, she said to Ahab, "Get up and take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite that he refused to sell you. He is no longer alive, but dead." 16 When Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, he got up and went down to take possession of Naboth's vineyard.
Christians Will Not Want To 1. Covet, that is, have a sinful desire for anything that is forbidden to us by God.
1 Timothy 6:9-10 9People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. 10For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with manygriefs.
Christians Will Not Want To 1. Covet, that is, have a sinful desire for anything that is forbidden to us by God. 2. Sinfully try to get what belongs to others.
1 Timothy 6:6-8 6But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. 8But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.
Philippians 4:19 19And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.
Christians Will Want To 1. Be content and thankful for what we have since we know God will give us whatever we need.
Psalm 37:4 4 Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart.
Matthew 6:33 33But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
Christians Will Want To 1. Be content and thankful for what we have since we know God will give us whatever we need. 2. Desire and seek only what pleases God.
