What we need? … Targeted traffic!!! • Website Promotion - the continuing process of increasing the website traffic. • Website Traffic- determined by: • the number of visitors • the number of pages they visit. So, how to bring more visitors to the website and “convert” them from accidental visitors to website users?

  3. Thoughts before Promoting a Website • Website Target / Audience / Niche Who we are intended to reach to? - Lawyers? NGOs? Patient groups?... • Visitors’ Needs What our visitors expect to get from the website? - Laws? Explanations? Consultation and Help? … • Website Objectives What objectives we plan to accomplish? - Inform? Educate? Feedback? Advocate? … • Outcomes / Expected Results What results we expect to receive? - To be defined by country teams…

Remember Keys to Success • Content is the King Creating great website content - attractive, interesting and useful - to become the authority on your issue… • Networking & Content Distribution Link building (DMOZ etc.), Social Media (Twitter, Facebook…), Commenting in related websites/blogs/forums (not spamming!)… • Search Engine Optimization and Ranking in Google/Bing Relevant Keywords in titles, headings and page content, Number and quality of links to your site, Tagging… • Off-site Promotion Techniques Business Cards, Email Signature, PR, Publications and other Branding methods, “word of mouth” …

Use Google and Bing to Get Popularity At the most basic level, Google/Bing matches: • What users want- What they type (search query); and • What is offered online - Text and keywords on pages …and ranks your page based on: • How well it matches - How often keywords appear; and • Your site’s reputation- How many other sites link to you …relative to everyone else’s pages

Use Social Media to Generate Links Use Twitter, Facebook and other networks and blogs as focal points for users looking for the latest. • By telling users what is new on your site, they will be more likely to link to it • By building community, you generate a constant flow of traffic • Links from your twitter/blog to your site count, too Building an active community around you and your website, will increase traffic and build your authority.

In general, people like and link to: • Interesting and useful content • Sites that update frequently • How-to guides and tutorials • Lists (“Top 10 best…”) • Thought-provoking or unexpected content Research your issue community and reach out. Encourage linking to drive traffic to your website!

Final Remarks • Focus on creating a great content based on what users are looking for in your issue area (the keywords they’re typing in Google/Bing) • Go social and increase the number and quality of links to your site • Use your partners and all of program activities to socialize your website • Become the online authority on the health rights issue
