  2. Geckos • Able to walk on walls and ceilings • Van der Waals forces are primary form of adhesion • Geckos feet in close contact with surface

  3. Foot Structure • Each foot has thousands of hairs called setae • Each seta has hundreds of submicron features called spatulae • Spatulae can deform to fit nearly any surface

  4. Goals • Use MEMS facilities on campus to create synthetic foot structure • Polymers • Nanowires • Use of optimization techniques developed by Dr. Dunn
