  3. Waves of Immigration • The Antebellum period was one of the great waves of immigration in the U.S. • Increased opportunities • Trouble overseas • Famine in Ireland • Oppression in Germany

  4. Experiences • Difference experiences challenged both groups • Germans in the countryside • Bought land and farmed • Established German enclaves • Irish congregated in the cities • Found jobs in industry • Found jobs in unskilled construction labor

  5. Reaction • Concerns raised about the “new immigrants” • Germans • Enclaves similar to Germany • Widespread use of the German language • Development of the “biergarten” • Irish • Largely uneducated • High levels of poverty • Large numbers were Catholic
