  1. TWELFTH NIGHT 301 Rakhi L. Lalwani, Assistant Professor of English, SNMV CAS.

Act III – Scene I • Cesario arrives at Olivia’s house to deliver another love message from Orsino. • Viola meets Feste outside and after some friendly banter and some puns, Viola realises that Feste is in fact cleverer than most people. • Sir Toby Belch and Sir Andrew have a very awkward conversation with Cesario. • Olivia enters with Maria and requests to speak in private to Cesario. • Olivia tells Cesario not to talk about Orsino and admits embarrassment in having sent her ring to Cesario. • Olivia openly admits her love to Cesario and asks him to stay. • Cesario tells Olivia that he can never love any woman. • Olivia, in order to meet Cesario again, tells him that he may be able to convince her to love Orsino if he meets her again and again. Act III – Scene II • Sir Andrew has decided to leave because Olivia does not favour him. • He is angry that Olivia is more affectionate to a messenger (Cesario) than to him. • Sir Toby and Fabian make him believe that Olivia is doing so in order to make him jealous, because she likes him. • They advise him that he should have entered and challenged the messenger to a duel, but he wasted a good opportunity. • They ask him to write a letter regarding the same , so that he can appear as a hero in front of Olivia. • After Sir Andrew leaves to write the letter, Sir Toby discloses that he has been sponging off on Sir Andrew and if he leaves, he will have no money. • Maria enters and tells them that Malvolio has decided to act as per the letter and that they should see the fun.   4. Act III – Scene III • Sebastian enters with Antonio, who has followed him into town. • Antonio tells Sebastian that he was worried about him and will not leave him alone. • Sebastian is glad that he has found a friend and tells Antonio that he would like to visit the town. • Antonio is worries that he might be recognised by his enemies and tells Sebastian that he fought bravely against Duke Orsino’s men and never returned the loot that he got from them. • He suggests that Sebastian meet him at an inn called The Elephant after some time. • He gives Sebastian his purse of money, in case he wants to purchase something for himself.   5. Act III – Scene IV • Olivia calls for Malvolio who enters dressed very strangely and speaking like a madman. He even quotes from the letter that he thinks came from Olivia. • Olivia recieves the message that Cesario is back with another message of love and informs Maria to ask Sir Toby to look after Malvolio, who she thinks has gone mad. • Malvolio is overjoyed that Olivia loves him so much that she has asked her own uncle to look after him. • Maria enters with Sir Toby and Fabian and all three behave as if the devil has possessed Malvolio, who is acting very rude. • Malvolio exits after Sir Toby and Fabian seem to be talking to the devil inside him rather than to him. • Sir Toby and Fabian are very happy with the way the plan is shaping up and decide to tie up Malvolio for some more fun.   6. Act III – Scene IV • Sir Andrew enters with a letter he has written to challenge Cesario to a duel. Sir Toby and Fabian decide to have fun at his expense as well. • They inform Sir Andrew that Cesario is about to leave and ask him to jump in front of him, draw a sword and start swearing at him to scare him. • Sir Toby decides not to give the letter to Cesario, but decides to lie to Cesario saying that Sir Andrew is a seasoned fighter and wants to kill him. • Olivia asks Cesario to come again to meet her and leaves. • Sir Toby approaches Cesario and tells him that Sir Andrew wants to kill him. • Cesario is shocked because he has never harmed anyone.   7. Act III – Scene IV • Cesario requests Sir Toby to find out what he has done against Sir Andrew. • After Sir Toby leaves, Cesario asks Fabian about Sir Andrew, who describes him as a fierce warrior. • On the other side, Sir Toby describes Cesario as a fine soldier in order to scare Sir Andrew. • Both parties are equally scared of the other. • Cesario (Viola) is worries that she might have to tell the truth about her gender. • Sir Toby and Fabian force the other two to draw their swords. • At this point, Antonio enters and thinking that Cesario is Sebastian, offers to fight instead. Act III – Scene IV • Officers enter and arrest Antonio under the orders of Duke Orsino. • Helpless, Antonio asks Cesario to return his purse to him. • Cesario, who has never met Antonio before is confused about what Antonio is saying and tells him that he is ready to pay him money from his own pocket. • Antonio is hurt that Sebastian is acting this way with him, even after all that he has done for him. • Antonio rants that he looked after the young man and saved him from drowning. • The officers think he must be mad and drag him away. • Cesario (Viola) allows hope to enter her heart, thinking that Antonio might have saved Sebastian. • Sir Toby and Fabian are shocked that Cesario is such a coward that he refused to recognise his friend and urge Sir Andrew to bet him up.
