Ergonomics The Science of fitting the job to the worker
Proper Use of Ergonomic Principles Reduces the Risk of Muscular Skeletal Diseases(MSD) • MSD is an injury or disorder to the: • Nervous system • Skeletal system • Soft tissue
Common MSD’s • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome • Tendonitis • Trigger Finger • Rotator Cuff Tear • Sciatica • Disk Disorders
MSD Signs and Symptoms • Hands and wrists: pain, swelling, numbness, loss of strength • Fingers: pain, loss of strength, mobility and feeling • Feet & toes: numbness, stiffness, burning sensation • Limping or stiff back • Swelling or inflammation of joints • Cradling of arms, neck or massing hands, wrists or arms
Risk Factors • Repetition • Force • Awkward Postures • Contact Stress • Vibration
Intervention Checklist • Which risk factor is worse? Awkward Posture…fix that first! • Steps to take: • Re-design the task • Change the work practice • Add personal protective equipment • Physical conditioning
Overall Environment • Proper lighting • Clutter free work zones • Slip resistant flooring • Level/firm surfaces • Mechanically sound equipment • Work surface should accommodate full range of body motion • Items should be located within easy reach • Accommodate multiple working positions
Ideas to implement • Avoid contact with hard or sharp edges • Move items close to the edge • Pad the edge • Do not use hands as hammers • Do not use hands or body as vice • Reduce stooping, twisting, reaching • Do not exceed your lifting limits • Use job rotation • Stretch • Keep items carried between knee and shoulder height
Systematic Approach • Overall Assessment of Work Area & Work Tasks • Identification of Ergonomic Risk Factors • Determination of Best Intervention Strategy • Implementation of Ideas
Office Situations • Begin with the Relationship between the Desk, Chair, and Person • Asses the “Fit” of the Chair to the Person • Assess the Position of Key Items Used to Perform Work Tasks • Assess the Physical Stress Applied by the Work Station’s Design
Intervention Strategies(In order of Effectiveness) • Engineering • Redesign the Work Area • Work Practice • Establish Specific Processes to Follow • Personal Protective Equipment • Gloves, Glasses, etc. • Physical Conditioning Program • Proactive
Goal • To Reduce Injuries • To Promote a Healthy Workforce • Identify Problem Areas Before Injuries Occur • Evaluate Work Tasks based on Employee Input Methods
