  2. Advice I • Preparation is critical. • Make timing your ally. • Define your negotiating role based on the interests you represent. • Facilitator, mediator, arbitrator, advocate. • Strive to exemplify character.

  3. Advice II • Delegate your negotiating authority. • Ensure the other side has complete authority to negotiate. • Seek direct communication with principals. • Focus resolutely on interests. • Don’t confuse interests with bargaining positions. • Protect ongoing relationships.

  4. Advice III • Become a skillful active listener. • Be manifestly willing to walk away from the table. • Do not bluff. • “Never draw unless you mean to shoot.” • As far as practicable, maintain open negotiations. • Create an historical record.

Advice IV • Communication of the ultimate agreement is a critical phase of negotiation. • Scrupulously honor and enforce agreement. • Trust is of paramount importance. • Agreement are affected by evolving perceptions of veracity and power. • Hire people more talented than oneself. • Look for the best in each person.
