The facts in the field • Women are important users of transport • Women have more difficulties to move (difficult access to social services, economic activities and IMT) • Women are poorly represented in all levels of decision-making • Credit access is particularly difficult for women in the rural areas. • Rural infrastructures are in very poor condition.

  4. Purpose • To identify existing gender constraints in rural transport • To prepare an optimum approach for gender inclusion in rural roads and transport projects • To propose components with gender focus for inclusion in the PNIR

  5. Key Issues We look at four aspects of gender : Mobilization of Resources Transport Services & Rural Road Infrastructure Project IMT Institutional Strengthening

  6. Methodology Visit of five CR (Rural Communities)  Meetings with women organizations  Meetings with resources people and organizations  Analyze documentation already available

  7.  Institutional strengthening Increase women’s representation on decision-making councils Improve the participation of women in income earning activities Encourage the decentralization policies Main findings

  8.  Resource mobilization Increase women’s capacity in entrepreneurial Develop training programs on credit mechanisms Inform and sensitize women on existing credit programs Main findings

  9. Transport services & rural road infrastructure Give all-weather rural road accessibility Diversify women’s income generating activities Improve transport services to access health centers and education centers. Main findings

  10. IMT Appropriate IMT for women’s uses Make IMT accessible to women Promote animal transport for women Main findings

  11. Use a global approach that including the 3 aspects: roads infrastructures, Transport services and IMT.  Promote women’s participation in all steps of the projects cycles  Put in place road maintenance process based in low cost  Provide technical assistance and training to main users, notably women  Set up Local Project Committees with minimum 50 % women CONCLUSION
