  1. Rabies “The Greeks derived the word "lyssa", from "lud" or "violent"; this root is used in the name of the genus of rabies lyssavirus.”

  2. Rabies; Symptoms The first symptoms after infection is malaise, headache, fever then acute pain, random uncontrolled excitement, depression, violent movements and hydrophobia (fear of water). Then later, they may experience periods of mania, exhaustion and weakness then eventually, coma.

  3. Rabies; The virus Rabies is caused by a neurotrophic virus called the ‘Rabies Virus’. This virus is in the Order ‘Monoegavirales’, Family of ‘Rhabdoviridae’ and part of the violent Genus ‘Lyssavirus’. All transcription and replication events take place in the cytoplasm inside a specialized “virus factory“,or called the ‘Negri body’ (named after Adelchi Negri). They are 2-10 µm in diameter and only has a single stranded of RNA.

  4. Rabies; Transmission All warm-blooded animals can have rabies transmitted to each other, though birds are only known to be infected experimentally. Only mammals can get it transmitted naturally. The virus is usually present in nerves and saliva in a rabid animal and is usually transmitted by bites as the rabid animal is usually aggressive, then the virus enters the peripheral nervous system and towards the central nervous system.

  5. Rabies; Causing the Symptoms As the virus eventually reaches the brain it enters the ‘prodromal’ phrase and causes acute inflammation of the brain. This is when the symptoms appear.Once the symptoms appear, treatment will be almost useless and mortality is over 99%.The virus may also inflame other areas such as the spinal cord.

  6. Rabies; Prevention Rabies can be prevented by being vaccinated, and widespread vaccination of wildlife, domestic dogs and cats and other animals with a vaccine called Recombinant rabies vaccine (V-RG) which is very effective, lasting and harmless to humans.

  7. Rabies; Figures of Infection Vaccination of animals can help but there will always be cases of rabies in the wild, though very little in humans or domestic animals. Michigan Statistics 1954~1999
